We all know that the New Year comes with New Year's resolutions. Most of these consist of getting on shape, eating healthier, or going to the gym, but lets be honest, the gym is not always the most "fun" place to workout. It can get mundane at times, and sometimes you just need to try a new class or routine so you don't get bored. So whether you're trying to spice up your workout, or getting in shape for the new year, here are some fun new workouts to try.
1. Aerial Yoga
Aerial Yoga is just like regular yoga, except you're doing it in a giant hammock. Basically, you sit in this hammock, which looks like a scarf and is made out of nylon material that can hold up to 2,000 pounds (so no, you're not going to rip it). Aerial yoga has all the calming effects of regular yoga with added benefits of anti-gravity and getting to hang around in a giant hammock which, you have to admit sounds pretty cool. Not to mention, if you practice traditional yoga you probably know how hard inversions can be, (e.g. headstands and handstands) but with the hammock this makes those extremely hard inversions a lot easier.
2. Barre
Barre is a fitness class based on the essence of dance focusing mostly on ballet style. This is nothing like your typical Zumba class. This is an intense class focused on strength and flexibility and less on rhythm and movement. Barre is designed to sculpt, slim, and stretch your body to give you that desired "dancer's body." Believe me, this class is by no means easy. It targets specific muscles not traditional used in a regular workout class, leaving your muscles burning and you feeling like you got something out of the workout that you normally don't.
3. Boxing/Kickboxing
This is for you who aren't particularity interested in feeling graceful or calm during your workouts. Not all boxing is done in a gym Rocky-style. Many fitness centers offer boxing or kickboxing classes. This is basically just a glorified, more fun version of shadow-boxing. You're not directly punching or kicking a bag or person instead you're air boxing. This may not sound as fun, but I promise it is. Kickboxing classes basically make you feel like a super hero in a Marvel movie, and who doesn't want to feel like that? The confidence gained from this class is awesome. You'll walk out of the class with you're shoulders back and chin up.
4. HIIT
HIIT classes standing for High Intensity Interval Training is an interval based class that combines full body strength training with high intensity cardio bursts designed to tone your body, and improve your endurance. This is another class out there for you guys who don't like fluff in a workout. When you workout, you want to feel like you're really challenging your body, and with this class you'll absolutely feel it, probably even the morning after when you're sore from this intense workout.
5. Pole
Yes, I mean pole dancing. No not stripping, just the physical act of holding your body up and spinning it around and on a pole, which is actually very challenging. Not only do pole classes help with upper body strength and flexibility, you get the added bonus of getting in touch with your feminine side, which in turn helps with confidence.
Now these are just a few of the fun classes available near most locations in the US, but there are always more to discover and try, so if you get bored of a certain workout routine, switch it up with one of these (or many other) classes. Working out doesn't always have to be a burden, it can be fun.
P.S. For all you shy people out there that don't particularly like working out around others; some of these classes can be found on YouTube, check out channels like PopSugarFitness for more!
