People have been pushing to shut down SeaWorld for several years now. The cry for changes in SeaWorld's treatment of their animals surfaced after a trainer, Dawn Brancheau, was mauled and drowned by Tilikum, a killer whale. It came to light that these wild animals were being held in captivity and trained for the sole entertainment of the people. After the death of Brancheau, many other SeaWorld scandals and/or activities are coming into question.
Orca Breeding
This is quite possibly the most disturbing acitivity that has come to light. Male orcas are masturbated by trainers and female orcas are artificially inseminated with their sperm. This means that the orcas do not get to choose their own mate; rather, the female orcas are forced to give birth to children at a very young age, and the males orcas are not even made aware of their own offspring.
Spying on PETA
SeaWorld sent its employees to spy on PETA while pretending to be animal rights activists. The company did not issue an apology, and claimed that it was done for the "safety" of their employees.
Trainer Deaths
Besides the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau, Tilikum, and more so, SeaWorld, is responsible for the death of two other trainers. Because these animals are so frustrated and not meant to live in small spaces, they often let out their aggression on humans. It is important to remember that it is not the animal to blame, considering they are wild and not house pets.
Captivity of Killer Whales
Orcas held in captivity have a shorter life span than those found in the wild. That is because they are constantly living in a state of stress and are more prone to diseases like pneumonia, for example. Just recently, a baby orca, or calf, was found dead after living for just three months. Over forty orcas have died (many living short lives) while at SeaWorld since their opening in 1961.
If orcas aren't captured, they're killed
If an orca was too old or too undesirable or too rowdy, they would be shot and killed on the spot in the middle of the ocean. Then, they would be sunk to the bottom of the sea so their bodies wouldn't be discovered.
SeaWorld is currently experiencing an increase in park attendance, according to reports from 2018. This means that millions of people every year attend this "amusement park," despite the controversies and reported animal and human deaths. This also means that many people are not aware of these issues, while many just do not care.
SeaWorld has emotionally and physically abused their animals for decades while putting trainers and park-goers at tremendous risk. All we can do is hope that SeaWorld's scandals convince the mass public to stop attending the park, eventually leading to their downfall and shutdown, and more importantly, the release of these helpless and abused animals.
