There was always something so intimidating about committing to a major, it was like committing to one job for the absolute rest of your life. I pondered on English, Allied Health, maybe even Business, nothing felt right until I found Communications. The funny thing about COMM is it can mean whatever you want it to mean, you can do really anything with it.
Here’s just a few of the ‘everything’s’ you can do with a Communications degree:
1. Politics
Ever heard of a little Shonda Rhimes icon, Olivia Pope? Olivia practices persuasion, public relations, clarity, confidence, and listening skills in every episode, all skills gained from a COMM degree. A B.A. in a communication and a few internships in politics, and you’ll have yourself the next OP.
2. Sales
Sales is all about making connections and developing lasting relationships. Your product may be great but without a little communication, no one will ever know about it. Communication degree’s give you the skills and resources to attract loyal customers.
3. Marketing
Very similar to sales, marketing focuses communicating products to the public through social media, ad campaigns, events, etc. and then crunching the numbers on the success of each marketing tactic. Check your school's course catalog, there may be a Marketing Communication class just sitting there waiting for you to take.
4. Digital marketing
Communication degrees are so easy to mold into exactly what you want them to be, by taking a series of communication classes alongside digital media and design courses, you’ll have the perfect blend to break into the digital marketing field.
5. Public relations
PR is a big challenge but comes with such a high reward if your good at it. Every day is new, with new challenges to overcome, hurdles to jumps, and scandals to spin.
6. Human resources
The key department for all businesses is the HR department, and the backbone of the HR department is communication. HR is involved in recruiting new staff, handling worker conflict, communication company policies and changes to employees, and everything in between.
7. Teaching
Alongside a teaching certification, communication is a great way to work with young kids developing their autonomy and learning to be independent. Knowing the correct way to interact with a child vs. an adult is taught in classes such as Childhood Communication and Development, a popular class here at UConn.
