Whether you live in the city and are not a fan of public transportation, are on a college campus and cannot have your car, or are coming back from a late night out, having Uber has definitely given us several benefits as riders.
In my experience, I have found that each Uber ride I have taken has had it's own very unique experience in itself. Sometimes they can be painfully silent and awkward and you cannot wait to get out of the car. While other rides I have found myself telling a stranger about my life and learning all about their's!
Here are a few thoughts I've had while I've been in an Uber, and I'm sure you have too:
1. 4.91 star rating. This could be fun.
Your ride is on its way. Benjamin knows English and French, enjoys awesome music, and has a cool car? This sounds too good to be true. You open the car door and enter into a world of unimaginable possibilities.
2. I have to walk to my pick up spot? To the other side of the road? I thought you were picking me up?
When you are being picked up in large cities like Manhattan, it is never out of the ordinary that the driver would like for you to wait for them in a specific pick up spot. However, this is usually a 0.4 mile walk on the other side of an extremely busy street - and it can be a bit confusing.
3. I’m coming! I’m coming! Please don’t speed off without me.
"Your driver will be leaving soon," says a notification appearing on your phone. You race for the car door before it speeds off and jump in the back seat without even breaking a sweat.
4. Please don't be a predator, please don't be a predator.
You should never judge a book by its cover. Yet, when you are in a a silent car with a sixty year old man with a white beard and a weird look in his eye, it is not irrational to want to get from point a to point b safely.
5. Okay you’re cool. Listening to some Jay-Z, I see you.
Music is definitely the most universal language. When you can bond over a song playing on the radio with a complete stranger, it makes the experience much more worthwhile.
6.) Maybe I’ll start a conversation?
Starting a conversation with a driver can either be extremely natural and easy or incredibly boring and awkward. It is so easy to ask the standard, "Where are you from?" or "How long have you been driving for uber?" I like asking about their funniest experiences as a driver.
7.) Okay he doesn't want to share his hopes and dreams with me...
I know this is heart breaking, yet we have to remember that Uber drivers are people as well. They are not always up to have a mind blowing conversation. It's a hit or miss.
8. Please don't pick someone up on pool, please don't pick someone up on pool...
We all do it. We order Uber pool because of the cheaper fares but are not ready to commit to the fact that someone else may be joining along the way. A lot of times there aren't other riders but there is also a lot of chances you can meet someone cool!
9. I hope sitting up front isn't too awkward.
I always man up and volunteer to do this whenever traveling in a large group. It can be a little awkward. Yet think of it this way: When are you going to be in this car again?
10. Shall I splurge on Uber X today?
Somedays we just feel like splurging on a prompt drop off and solo rider experience. So I say... Treat. Yo. Self.
11. The turn is coming up. 600 feet. 200 feet.. and you missed it.
This can be one of the most frustrating things us riders will experience. I always try to be courteous with the driver but in my head it is a very different dialogue.
12. Fearing for our lives as we cut people off on the highway.
North Jersey Uber drivers love to hit the gas when merging on to the highway. Often times the driver cuts other cars off or ends up making some questionable decisions...
13. Please don’t turn around and make eye contact as you are driving. I believe we want to live today.
Once again... sometimes we get those drivers who are either creepy or get too involved with the conversation they get a bit distracted. It can be terrifying.
14. Are you a lit driver or a silent driver… Do you have an aux cord?
Once the driver offers up an aux cord you know it is all over. A late night out has now become an uber party!
15. This isn’t therapy, why are you telling this person you’re entire life story?
"I don't know why, but I just always felt isolated as a child."
"And why do you think that?"
"What's your zodiac sign?"
