10 Things Every College Student Takes For Granted But Should Be Thankful For This Holiday Season

I think one of my biggest regrets from my younger years was taking everything I had for granted. I never appreciated my parents to the extent that I do now; my siblings, my school, my house, everything.

As I'm halfway through my junior year of college, I've realized how amazing and important all of these things are to me and I've made a point to tell my parents this all the time. It might sound cheesy, but Thanksgiving is the time to appreciate all the things you sometimes overlook. Make a list of things you are thankful for and share them, like I am doing right now.

1. Family.

As I said before, this is the most important. Your family has been there for you your entire life -but they might not always be. So don't take them for granted.

2. Friends.

Your friends are the family you get to choose. Sometimes, we choose the wrong ones. But, as for the right friends, you need to keep them close.

3. Your school/education.

If you're in college, you're likely to know how expensive it is to attend. However you were able to fund being here, it's important to remember that not everyone has this opportunity in life. Stay humble.

4. Your pets.

We simply can't forget to cherish our furry friends this holiday season. They need you just as much as you need them.

5. Your health.

Oftentimes, we look over how lucky we are to have good health. We don't always take care of our bodies in the best ways, but even just being alive is a blessing.

6. Where you live.

Whether it's a giant mansion in Miami or a shabby apartment in a small town, appreciate where you call home. Some don't even have that option.

7. Having food on the table.

Next time mom brings out the turkey, thank her and tell her how glad you are able to have such a nice meal. Although you might be used to having a nice dinner every night, we all know that's not always the case. But I know you'll post a picture on your Snapchat story anyway.

8. All of your gadgets.

Living in 2019 is so expensive! We all have iPhones, MacBooks and an Apple Watch to fit in with the crowds. Even these small "gifts" are something we should be grateful for.

9. Your car.

Yeah, cars are a luxury. Not everyone gets to drive a car to school or work every day. Try picturing what you'd have to do without your car, and then you might feel a little thankful for the one you have.

10. Your future.

You've already gotten this far, you should be excited for what's to come. Be grateful for the experiences you've had and the upcoming ones.

I can't force you to be appreciative every day but I hope with this list, you start to understand where I'm coming from. Not everyone lives the same life as you, and maybe some have more than you. Either way, being thankful and at peace with what you have is the only way to enjoy it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
