A few weeks ago, I had the blessed opportunity to attend a Christian conference down in Florida with Cru called Big Break. Cru is an on-campus non-denominational Christian organization that is on college campuses across the country. The conference they hold down in Florida is about evangelization and giving us the proper techniques and tools to share the gospel with others.
When most people hear about evangelizing they either think it is odd for those who are on the receiving end and scary for those who are the ones evangelizing. As a Christian who had never done anything like that before, I thought both and was extremely hesitant to go. However, what I learned on this trip was something I could use my entire life, and this was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Evangelizing is not scary, and it is not weird, it is amazing and wonderful and helps you grow in unimaginable ways.
What we did on Big Break was go out on the beaches armed with games and the love of God and walked up to people and started spiritual conversations. We had cards with pictures on them and asked people which card most represented their life or represented their view of God. KGP’s (Knowing God Personally) were booklets that explained the four steps to having a relationship with God.
We introduced ourselves as people who were taking a survey (which we were essentially) and asked people if they were interested in answering a few questions. We were completely non-confrontational, and these methods allowed us to have some of the most amazing and fulfilling conversations ever.
One of the most important things I learned on this trip is that Evangelism is one of those things that’s scary until you do it. People are so much more open than you think they are and they are so much more open to faith than people think. There are also so many people who are misguided about who God is and what it means to have a relationship with Him.
I talked to a group of college girls visiting Florida for spring break and we had the most open and honest conservation that ended with us praying for one of the girls’ mothers. It is amazing how God can work through you when you let Him.
So next time when the opportunity arises don’t be scared to bring up Jesus and listen to what someone else thinks about Him. You may never know where the conversation may lead and who wants to let God into their hearts. It is not scary because with God anything is possible.
