It's almost the end of the first month of 2k17. So far, the year has been full swinging with two big events: the inauguration of the 45th President, Donald J. Trump, and the women's march (specifically, marching for women's rights). A past quote that really stood out to myself as a young woman is related towards feminism and equal rights. "Feminism by definition is: "The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”
Back in September of 2014, Emma Watson, British actress and former star of J. K. Rowling's famous Harry Potter series, spoke this remarkable statement in her UN speech. With eloquence and class, she spoke about her concerns and beliefs on equality. This being equal rights not just for women but also for men too. In addition, little girls and little boys. Feminism, women's rights, and gender inequality have been around since the beginning of time. These topics, rather say issues, are taught, discussed, and experienced in and outside the classroom. They are taught in our education system starting from pre-K to senior year of high school. Come college/post-high school and transitioning into adulthood, these issues play a significant role in our lives today through social media, the press, and the media as a whole.
Being a young woman in today's competitive and drastically changing society is not easy.Throughout history and even today, women have done great lengths to knock down the stigma of the glass ceiling. They worked hard to support their families, struggled, and do what they can to make ends meet. This also goes out to men as well.
I am a feminist. Rather, I am a believer of equality. I believe in equal rights for all regardless of gender, the color of your skin, background, ideals, or race. Living in a competitive and drastically changing society, it can be difficult to stay positive and stand out from the crowd. I stand for a variety of things. Not just for feminism, equality, but faith and greatness to come. Take a Stand. Your life matters.
