Epcot has Frozen over

Will the new ride at Walt Disney World let the "Frozen" storm rage on or will it remind us to let it go?

Disney has frozen over. Ever since Walt Disney Animation Studios’ unexpected phenomenon, "Frozen" debuted three years ago with billion dollars in the box office and the first Best Animated Feature Oscar for the studios, Disney has showcased "Frozen"in any way they can. Walk into any Disney Store and you can see shelves and shelves of "Frozen" merchandise. Ask any little kid about Frozen and you will have an hour-long conversation about the movie that would end with singing any of the signature songs. But wait, there’s more. After a successful short "Frozen Fever"debuted with last year’s remake of Disney’s beloved fairy tale, Cinderella, a holiday special will premiere on ABC next year with the cast (possibly minus the voice actors of the first movie’s defeated villains, Santino Fontana and Alan Tudyk) set to return. As expected, a sequel is being made. Currently, a Broadway musical of the movie is currently in the works, hitting the Broadway stage in Spring 2018 after a pre-Broadway run in Colorado next summer. Of course, there is Walt Disney World….

"Frozen" has stirred up lots of controversy at Walt Disney World. In 2014, "Frozen" closed the Epcot attraction, Maelstrom, so they make way for their own ride, which opens on June 21. They will also get their own meet and greet area for Anna and Elsa. The problem is the attraction, Frozen Ever After is being placed in the Norway area of World Showcase in Epcot. Norway was supposed to represent the country accurately and not represent any Disney movie worlds. Before I talk about my opinions of the attraction, let me defend it for a bit.

The ride at Disney World was first announced by MovieFone two months after the movie was released as the hype was beginning. So, replacing Maelstrom isn’t just for money. It’s because it was happened to be planned before Disney knew what impact "Frozen" was going to make. Nevertheless, Disney was also trying to see how popular "Frozen" was going to be before making any the plans. If Disney’s 2009 movie, "The Princess and the Frog" was just as successful, I guarantee that Tiana’s iconic restaurant would replace The Diamond Horseshoe at Disney World (Still waiting for that, Disney).

What do I think for the Disney additions? For Frozen Ever After, I have mixed feelings like everyone else. I didn’t care for Maelstrom because I thought there was no narrative. I thought it was short, but not to the point. Because there was no point at all. They go from Vikings to trolls to polar bears and….that’s it. Seriously, that’s it. I thought it was wasted potential. So, I didn’t care that the ride was gone. So, when the Frozen ride was announced, I thought it would be like the "The Little Mermaid" and "Winnie the Pooh" rides: Telling the story while riding through it. So, when the narrative was announced last summer, I was left cold. Not only is the ride not the movie, it sounds like it has the same problems like Maelstrom did. Frozen Ever After may have an actual plot this time, but it sounds like it’s going to be random scenes muddled together. The ride goes on like this: (SPOILERS)

You see the snowman, Olaf talking to the reindeer, Sven about the Winter Festival.

Okay, cool. A setup.

Then, you go to Troll Valley when Grandpappy (the troll who took away Anna’s memory) tells the children trolls how Anna and Kristoff (who was raised by the trolls) met.

Ummm…okay? Are they getting ready for the festival?

After that, you see Olaf ice skating.

Huh?

Right by him, you see Anna and Kristoff singing.

Are they getting ready for the festival? Or are they just hanging out? It’s great to hear Jonathan Groff and Kristen Bell sing, but where is the festival?

And afterwards, you go to Elsa’s famous ice palace and listen to her sing---what else?---“Let It Go.”

OH MY GOSH, WE GET IT! WE KNOW THE SONG!

Then, you go down a waterfall as you see Elsa’s giant snowman, Marshmallow and the miniature snowmen, the Snowgies (watch "Frozen Fever").

Okay, now that will be awesome.

The ride will conclude with Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Sven saying goodbye to the audience.

Hey, there’s the festival.

So, is it worth it to replace a ride that is actually relevant to the “Norway” part of Epcot with a ride that is now made for a quick cash grab? It’s too soon to say. It sounds like it, but I need to see the ride to judge. Honestly, the ride does sound like Disney’s not even trying to create a good ride. It sounds lazy and they’re only doing it to make money. I don’t think it has a heart. It’s cold as the movie’s setting itself. However, the meet and greet section is needed to bring back more princesses in Magic Kingdom since Anna and Elsa kicked out the classic princesses, Snow White and Aurora from the Disney Princess meet and greet in Magic Kingdom. Not to mention the next two Disney Princesses, Elena (from the upcoming series, "Elena of Avalor" ) and Moana are coming to the park later this year, so space is completely necessary.

"Frozen" is completely taking over the Norway section, which is supposed to represent Norway. The movie may take place in Norway, but empowering an important part of the park and taking away a lot of Norwegian representation is not okay.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
