In the world of entertainment, it has become hard to depict what is real and what is fake. With the indulgent of various social media platforms available to our disposal in the 21st century, the consumer may attempt to dig deeper into the world of entertainment. However, how can we indeed discover the reality from the acting in the world of entertainment? With the lines of the entertainment thinly blurred in the field of sports, we must understand that the more profound meanings the business may hold when it comes to sports.
Growing up, those who often partake in various sports will end up finding careers within the game or will become avid supporters. Regularly many families will gather to watch sporting events as a way to support their local/national team. Thus, the notion of familial gathering exists across the world has allowed for various businesspeople to use this meeting as a source of income. However, the existence of cash flow in a sport may direct it to be played in ways that those controlling the money may want to see it. So, how do we feel when we realize that the sport is fake, or is being played with some discrepancies?
The debate of wheater a sport is being faked is a notion that I find interesting. It is a topic of discussion that has created heated arguments with people in my closest circle and family. These sports are often what causes the divide between T.V. time. Two similar platforms that have caught my attention rises with the support and the dedication to television time is regarding the WWE and the UFC. As a person who has enjoyed both, I tend to prefer the UFC over WWE event any day. My preference rises from the fact that I am an individual who is accustomed to the Sport of Martial Arts, in which many instructors within my school are either amateur fighters trying to make a name for themselves, or fighters that have received high ranks within the world of UFC itself.
If I were questioned, as to why I preferred watching the UFC event, I would state that I enjoy it over WWE because I find an authenticity to the game. I see that the fights that happen within the UFC card are fought on a practical basis, rather than the storyline which that the WWE follows. Despite the fact that both sports call for injuries, I find that the lack of reality behind the WWE wrestling matches, to remain utterly loyal to the sport. However, as someone who is a fan of the Bella twins, I find that they bring about a spark to the game that keeps me coming back.
In an article written by Chris Smith in Forbes titled “UFC Vs. WWE: How Much More Is Real Fighting Worth?”, It seems that UFC was sold for a sum of 4 billion dollars to a company that runs WWE. Despite the sale of UFC, it seemed that it brought in a total of $600 million in 2015 alone; while WWE brought $659 million in 2015. Despite the WWE cashing in almost $60 million more than the UFC, in 2015, Smith states the UFC is valued higher than the WWE. While UFC was worth $4 billion, the WWE was worth $1.5 billion.
The rise of the UFC proves that there is a rise in the desire to watch a practical reality of the sports entertainment business. But the line of the entertainment business taking over the two sports allows for a thin line to distinguish the fact of the two sports difficult. Our modern-day social media outlets may give us entry to the world of both sports, but we can understand that the media outlets allow for platforms that the people involved making money. This understanding must enable us to understand the modern day societies love for money and fame.
