A Different View of College Life

College is a special opportunity, which is easy to forget

A Different View of College Life

The summer after graduating high school everyone and their mother will tell you "enjoy college it's the best four years of your life!" Which if you really think about, is kind of sad. I think their point, though, is more well-intentioned.

College is intended to be a time to challenge yourself intellectually and specialize in certain skills. And it is, once you're in your major and taking all the classes within your major. However, there are some aspects besides this specialization that really are a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Sticking within the realm of school, there will never again be a time in your life in which you can take an in-depth course on a subject that will most likely be of little use in your professional career. Being able to take a course on astronomy or anthropology or whatever gen. ed. or elective you choose is a great opportunity to learn about a topic that actually interests you outside of your major. It is a way to broaden your horizons. And unless you're willing to pay a large amount of money in the future for just one course, the best way you will be able to learn about an interesting subject is through reading articles and watching videos online; and let's be honest, without a professor to grade you, you won't be reading these materials as intensely as in a classroom.

Outside of school, college campuses are incredible places as well. Never again will you be surrounded by thousands of people, most of who are within four years of your age and have similar interests. This is a great opportunity to meet so many people and make friends. This is why, if someone might have struggled socially in high school they almost always find a group of friends in college. There are so many people to get to know; all of whom are smart enough to be accepted into your college. Everyone you run into, whether they are in your major or not, is capable of having an intellectual, in-depth conversation, which is another great aspect of the college campus.

So when all of your aunts and uncles tell you college is the best time of your life, they're not saying it was their "peak". Instead, it's a time in your life when you can learn about almost any academic subject and at the same time meet a huge amount of different people and make tons of new relationships. It's a time and place that cannot be reproduced, so make the most of it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
