5 Reminders To 'Enjoy The Little Things'

Make this your life motto.

I'm sure you've heard this phrase before, but are you actually living by it? Just as tiny drops of water make up an ocean, it is the tiny moments in your day that make up a life filled with joy.

1. Why is it important to enjoy the little things in life?

Imagine if you spent more time acknowledging the little things in life rather than dwelling on nuisances. How much happier would you be? Enjoy the little things in life because, one day, you'll look back and realize how big they were. Ask yourself what gives you pleasure and comfort, even if it's not absolutely needed.

2. Life is beautiful. Notice it.

In our society, busyness has taken over our mantle of success. Slowing down, eating better, sleeping better, and enjoying the little things will make you an overall happier person. Take a step back and look at the life you live. It's spectacular. It's much easier to look at the better things in life, so why not make the most out of the little things that complete you? Stop and take notice. That is the only way you'll start to appreciate the life you live.

3. Adopt the gratitude.

When you take notice of the little things, you're adopting an act of gratitude, like brushing your teeth or showering every day. Make it a habit. You'll see an immediate change in yourself. What you focus on, is what will grow. People who constantly pick out the negatives in situations aren't living their best life. They're living a life based on jealousy and negativity. Ultimately, they're bringing down the people around them. The more you focus on the bad, the more you will dwell on it. Focus on the good. Watch yourself grow.

Accustom yourself to be grateful for everything around you. Be grateful for your mistakes and bad experiences. Take it as a learning experience. Take on the act of gratitude. Your world will light up, my friend.

4. Get started as soon as possible.

Pay attention. Ask yourself what makes you smile. What makes you feel fully present in the moment? Listen to your heart. I don't mean this romantically. Literally listen to your heart. What makes it beat fast? What do you feel when you're listening to your favorite song or watching puppies play? Take it all in.

Reflect on your day and pick out the tiniest things that made you happy. Realize when something is making you happy. Take your headphones out and enjoy the world as it is. The smile someone gives you while walking past you might be the brightest part of your day.

5. Life is too short.

Although it's practical to set major goals, take time to enjoy the little things. Do what makes you happy and no one else. Take advantage of puppies, sunsets, smiling at strangers, corny jokes, and finishing a book. The list is endless. Life is too short to not appreciate the small things. One day, they will mean the most to you.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
