Being an English major is more than just speaking English. Yes, I know this sounds like the obvious, but you would be surprised how many people ask what is there to know about English? Or the most common question what can you do with that?
I have heard the question "what can you do with that" countless of times now and it makes me want to just scream! There are a lot of different routes English majors can conquer that is not teaching an English class. Many people do not realize, but it is such a broad subject to major in that can go further than just teaching. I am wanting to pursue a career in publications. That is far from teaching.
An English major may look easy to others, or not as complex as the accounting major that is working on their mathematical study. But being an English major myself, I can consider the work we do just as complex. It is much more than just reading novels, and writing short papers. Being an English major requires you to have four 10 page papers due in a week. Not including the 40 pages of reading assigned to you for the next class. Therefore, you have to work ahead prior to the syllabus or you'll fall behind.
Keeping in mind we only get two strikes on a paper and a final exam by the end of the semester. Some may say that sounds like a breeze, but it does not give you a lot of opportunities to be able to do poorly on any paper if you want an A or B in the class. Being in this major I know the hard work and dedication it takes for this, but I also know it is one that can go further than just "reading a book" or "speaking the language."
