End The Occupation: America’s War On Black People

Whites need to wake up to our white supremacist reality. We're responsible for ending it.

End The Occupation: America’s War On Black People
MSNBC

Another week. Another row of hashtags expressing support for a black person shot by police. It is fortunate that Charles Kinsey, a behavioral therapist for an autistic person in Miami, Florida, made it out alive. This time.

Are you ready white America? Are we ready to admit now that our government is intent on keeping African-Americans in a constant state of hyper-vigilance? Can we admit that “police reform” will do nothing to end the occupation?

I’ve written about this topic countless times as both a show of solidarity with black people and a civil attempt to open up a dialogue with other white people who are otherwise uneducated about police brutality, but I refuse to cater to your white fragility any longer. No one is listening -- either out of willful ignorance or openly bigoted refusal to talk. You, my white readers, if you lack the courage to actively condemn State violence deployed against African-Americans, then you are as culpable in promoting White supremacy as Donald Trump is. You are aiding the occupation. You are Dylann Roof. Nothing I write about this from here on out is going to be written in any polite tone.

Charles Kinsey was unarmed, compliant with the police, laying down with his hands in the air in order to show to police that he was not a threat to their safety or anyone else. He has no criminal record, dressed respectably and was attempting to reason with the police – reportedly he asked the officer why he was shot and the officer simply replied, “I don’t know.”

Why does he not include a bunch of hyperlinks I won't click on like always, you might ask? For the simple reason that you need to go look this up yourself if you can’t believe me or the facts. Do not believe police narratives. Do not say anything that remotely implicates police as innocents in need of public defense. They are agents of the State with all the resources that come with enforcing white supremacy at the local level. Black people are disproportionately under attack by police and people have the audacity to still blame the oppressed for their own oppression. Do we even want to know the stories of Latinx immigrants who can’t protest because they fear being deported? Do we want to know how Native Americans are aggressively policed on their own land? Do we want to hear how women are consistently harassed by police at “routine” traffic stops?

Question yourself, white reader, question how deeply invested you are in your own whiteness. How far are you willing to go to defend yourself and to insist you are not racist, that you treat everyone like human beings? Indict yourself. Then do the rest of us, the others who have already done this work, already attempting to aid black Americans as best we can, a favor – educate yourself. Educate yourself on the reality of "Amerkkka." We are not a democracy. We are not all equal. We are not “a Christian nation." We are an empire.

I hate shaming you all like this. I hate pretending I’m somehow better than all of you because I’m not. I’ve said the “n” word. I’ve repeated ignorant liberal and conservative talking points with no consideration for what those words mean or why I’m saying them. I’ve not looked at my own identity and how I uphold empire. But I’m tired of watching so many people turn away from oppression and injustice. The occupation will end someday. Will you be ready for that?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
