The new Netflix series "End of the F***ing World" isn’t about the end of the world, it’s about the beginning of the world for its main characters James and Alyssa. Sure, things do not go their way at the end of the first season but they have learned something and have also got out of their small town full of small people and have begun to see the world, and by the world I mean England.
One thing that James and Alyssa have learned as they are experiencing the end and the beginning of the f***ing world is that they can actually love, be loved, and be confused about if they are in love, which is one of the most humanistic aspects of them as a characters which makes this series even better.
James can’t feel anything, that’s why he stuck his hand in a deep fryer, and why he can kill animals with his knife in a way reminiscent of Jeffrey Dahmer that makes him think he’s a psychopath. Alyssa can feel everything, that’s why she smashes her phone, why she is so sardonic, and why she is an overly horny wreckless virgin. They’re the perfect characters to pair together as leads in a series, friends, and as lovers.
As the plot thickens and you progress through the episodes, James and Alyssa learn how to love in the best way that they know how. They learn by changing personality traits to an extent because psychologically speaking, a person tends to pick up habits from the people they spend a fair amount of time with and are close to. So, James learns how to feel and that’s why he protects Alyssa the best way he knows how. Alyssa learns how to feel less which is why she leaves James when things became too much for her.
They’re a ragtag, modern day version of Bonnie and Clyde that don’t know what their next f***ing move is but know that they are moving. And, me, as a viewer, know that they are moving to an emotional intimacy with each other, despite the extreme plot twist at the end. But think about it, during the latter half of the series when they have found solace, James knows that they are overstaying their welcome but refuses to leave because Alyssa is happy and doesn’t want to abandon her. That’s an example of loving and caring, which is doing things you do not want to do or like doing to make the other person happy. Or, the fact that Alyssa encouraged James to do something he’s always wanted to do which is to punch his father in the face. Although it is a negative thing, it is still something a good partner is supposed to do--help you do the things that you’ve always wanted to do or have tried to do.
So, as James and Alyssa drove, walked, took the train, and even ran from place to place they did it together, learning from each other, as they show an audience the small things that you do for your partner can go a long way to help combat their personal end of the f***ing world.
