So I am a huge hip-hop/rap music fan. It has been my favorite genre of music since I was a toddler, and my favorite artist is Eminem. Now, my favorite artist is putting out a new album, and he's released the first track: "Walk on Water."
Now that "Walk on Water" has been out for a bit, and people have had time to listen to the song a few times, I think it's time to take a deeper look and listen. Just as this song, and the whole album that's coming, takes a look at Eminem's career, I'm going to do the same.
"Walk on Water" is Eminem at one of his most emotional moments in his career. I liken this song to the song "Beautiful" off of the "Relapse" album, but calling it another version of that song doesn't quite encompass what "Walk on Water" is. "Walk on Water" is the "Rap God" being human.
Between the "Marshall Matthers LP 2" and the release of "Walk on Water," Eminem apparently ate a whole lot of humble pie because he makes a pretty big 180 in this song. Then again, this is to be expected given that "Walk on Water," minus the outro, seems more like the "Recovery" and "Relapse" albums, rather than "MMLP2." The real question is, though, regardless of which version of Eminem this sounds like, is "Walk on Water" good?
In a word, Yes.
This version of Eminem is incredibly introspective, so "Walk on Water" is not for everybody. "Walk on Water" is for the fans who have followed Eminem since the early days of his career. Most importantly, "Walk on Water" is not from Eminem or Slim Shady, this is Marshall Matthers.
I feel like Beyonce sums up this song well with the post-chorus:
"Cause I'm only human, just like you
Making my mistakes, oh if you only knew
I don't think you should believe in me the way that you do
'Cause I'm terrified to let you down, oh."
This shows exactly how Marshall Matthers feels. This song is so emotional and so raw that fans can connect with it on a personal level.
Marshall Matthers, with some help from Beyonce, delivered a very personal song about what it's like underneath the persona. He has done this before, but never has a song of his felt quite like this. If the rest of the "Revival" album is going to have this kind of tone, then it may not be an album for everyone, but for the life long fans, this is for us.
