Getting acquainted with Salamanca

Emily Goes To Spain: Part 1

I am so thankful I have been given the opportunity to study abroad. I have never been abroad before so this is a very interesting experience. I am studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain for five weeks. It's a perfect amount of time in such a beautiful place.

So far I have seen so much of Salamanca. It is a walking friendly city full of dogs! I love it! I've seen a dog every day since I've gotten here, so I'm pretty happy.

One of my other favorite aspects of this city are these beautiful red flowers. They're everywhere! They are so beautiful and colorful. They just make me smile every time I walk by them.

While walking around you see some very unique buildings and monuments that are so historic. Salamanca is a unique city that has been ruled by various peoples like the Romans and the Moors, so you see the fusion of these cultures within the architecture of the buildings.

The cathedrals are also very beautiful. They are so large and have so much intricate detail carved into the stone pillars and sides of the churches. I feel like every time I walk by them I find a new detail that I may have missed.

One of the most impressive monuments is the Roman bridge that crosses over the Rio Tormes. It was built by the Romans and is still used today! Even though it's for pedestrian use now, it has been used as a major entrance into the city for hundreds of years.

Salamanca is both appealing visually and gustatorily. The food is absolutely delicious. Tapas are small portions of food and are free with a drink! Surprisingly, the tapas can actually be quite filling. The tapas can be a variety of dishes. One that I loved was this bread with melted brie and dried sweet potato strips on top. It was a little sweet, a little salty, and a little creamy all at once.

I still have so much to explore in this city and in Spain, but I'm also excited to be learning both in the classroom and outside of it and to be immersed in a new culture. I know the next few weeks are going to be filled with adventure and experiences I will never forget.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
