The Miami Electronic Gaming Association, also known as MEGA, teamed up with Miami University's Fighters Guild to host a gauntlet consisting of boss fights and dungeons on November 15 at the Armstrong Student Center. The two organizations pitted MEGA members against various video games and gaming challenges as gamers competed to earn prizes.
MEGA Quest is a night collaborated and hosted by both MEGA and MU Fighters Guild. Members team up into groups of up to four players while going head to head facing dungeons and their side quests led by dungeon masters and competing in the arena.
"It was a collaboration event," said Fighters Guild President Matt Danielson. "Both MEGA and Fighters Guild are separate organizations that work together to host events a lot of the time."
How MEGA Quest actually works is members must first assemble a group of four, and then each player must choose a class. Classes are minor abilities that can turn the tide in your favor. At the start of the event, there are four dungeons. Each of the dungeons is led by an officer. The officer picks a game of their choosing to be the theme of the dungeon, and with each dungeon, the officer also assigns a prize associated with it. Teams can earn these prizes by completing the most bonus objectives and defeating the dungeon. This year, MEGA Treasurer Chris Oh participated as a dungeon master.
"I was a participant of MEGA Quest last year, so being a dungeon master felt like a nice change of pace," Oh said." I used Mario maker, which allowed me to be in complete control of how the dungeon operated. I used this to try and create a consistent dungeon experience."
Since Oh's dungeon was based on Mario, his prizes were Mario memorabilia and a puzzle book. The other prizes he provided were themed around dystopia, which was the theme of MEGA Quest.
The Arena was a place players could go to if they were up for a real challenge. The Arena is a setup of competitive games that allows players to receive special items that can give them an edge in other events. The Arena consists of two vs. two team battles in a single-elimination format for the first four entrants.
New to this year's MEGA Quest was the mechanic experience. At the end of the event, the top four teams with the most experience were given the opportunity to choose from a variety of individual prizes. Side quests were another method for earning experience. Players could play three out of the four side quest games that could grant players high amounts of experience depending on what difficulty they chose for the game. If players happened to fail a side quest, they would still be granted a reward for their efforts.
"My mission as a member of the executive team for this event was to ensure that no one felt cheated and that teams were rewarded for making the most of the event," Oh said. "I hope everyone can take away that our goal was to put the club first and let them enjoy an awesome event that was fair."
