Have you ever been so deep in a book that you couldn’t put it down? That you kept on reading deep into the night? That you needed to get sleep for the long day ahead, but just couldn’t pry your fingers from the pages? Ellen Hopkins novels Crank, Glass, and Fallout have this affect on me. Hopkins is a great writerr and knows how to keep her audience engaged, Hopkins targets young adults and understands the struggles and hardships we endure. Crank is a number one seller because you can relate. As a teen Kristina has an encounter with the wrong boy and begins to do drugs; she eventually gets addicted to meth which she begins to refer to as the monster. No we all don’t get hooked on meth, but we do all have our own “monster”. We all deal with our own demons everyday. Some just poke at us once in awhile and others will devour you and spit you out just to do it again. Hopkins relays this very well. From being hooked on drugs to bringing kids into the world unprepared, Hopkins nails it head on.
“I hate this feeling. Like I’m here, but I’m not. Like someone cares. But they don’t. Like I belong somewhere else, anywhere but here, and escape lies just past that snowy window, cool and crisp as the February ait” (Hopkins). Hopkins relates to the empty void that haunts some individuals day and night. The void they never seem to be able to escape. Connecting with over 350 million people Hopkins gains more and more readers. Hopkins also relates to every girl who ohas had their heart broken by a man and feels he used her.
“ Girls get screwed.
Not that kind of screwed, what I mean is,
They’re always on the short end of things.
The way things work, how guys feel
Great but make girls feel
Cheap for doing
Exactly what
They beg for.
The way they get to play you,
All while claiming they love you and
Making you believe it’s true” (Hopkins)
Her deeper insights and connections is what keeps me intrigued while reading her novels. Will I always be a fan? Well, let’s put it like this “does a bear s*** in the woods”?
