The Fall Of Democracy At The Capitol Building

The Fall Of Democracy At The Capitol Building

Last Wednesday was a horrifying day for American citizens. We all witness the insurrection of the Trump followers that left a rally headed by Trump and his cronies, invade the Capitol Building in Washington DC. It was during the certification of the electoral college votes when this happened. It was planned by Trump. He forecasted this in December when he tweeted to his base for them to come to Washington DC on January 6, 2021, because it was going to be crazy.

The night before I told a friend after watching the news and hearing the beginning outcome of the Georgia election that today was probably going to be a shit show and our country will never be the same. I woke up seeing that Georgia was doing the right thing and the election was on the upswing. So, I had a better feeling about the rest of the political day, and I can only assume most Americans did as well. So obviously fate said, "Hold my beer," and so went the downfall of our reputation and our democracy in the world's view.

Yes, we look like a third world country with a thug trying to attempt a coup. His rhetoric has infiltrated the minds of people that are convinced they are saving our country from an evil dictator. Little do they realize they are being influenced by the real evil dictator and he has lost his moral compass and should be removed from office before daybreak.

As I witness windows being broken and people doing unspeakable things to a building that is for all the people of the United States it made me feel violated. I saw a picture of a man sitting at Nancy Pelosi's desk with his feet on it. Another man sitting at the dais of the Senate Chamber and his friend taking selfies with him. Broken windows and pulled down American flags to be replaced by confederate flags and Trump signs. This isn't an American protest, this a riotous coup that killed a woman. Bombs were found in different areas in the Capitol Building. The Capitol police were overrun and were unable to handle the number of people pouring into the building.

What I don't understand is why this was not expected? Why did the officials in Washington DC not plan for some sort of riot? They knew these people were in town. Many came from as far as Florida to attend this rally. Many spoke to reports and were not afraid to tell them their plans to break the rules of law and take over our country's Capital. It wasn't just spoken today. These people told everyone who would listen to them from the time Trump loss the election.

As a mass shooting, a plane crash, and yes even like September 11th, our country will never be the same after this event. If the powers that be do not prosecute these lawless criminals, from the men and women that broke windows and invaded the private and professional spaces of our elected officials, to those elected officials that incited this we can expect to see this again. Senator McConnell's speech this afternoon was a day late and a dollar short. He suggested that if we feed into the lies of a stolen election, there will never be a fair election again. People not happy with the outcome of an election will take to the streets and bully their rights to change it. Senators Hawley, Cruz, and the nine others that felt the need to feed the flames of Trump's lies of a stolen election should be sanctioned or asked to step down and go home in shame.

I hope we can come together in the next two weeks and cheer in the calming voice of President-Elect Joe Biden. Take a deep breath, find your calm center, and give yourself a moment to think of all the men and women in the armed forces that live in countries that deal with this kind of situation daily. Let's not be them, let's become the beacon of peace, hope, and love.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
