Yesterday, I was walking the historical streets of Philadelphia on my way to expedite my passport. On my walk, I passed Independence Hall and stopped to stare at it in all its historical glory. Remembering the debate that night, I thought to myself, “What would the past leaders of our country think of our current election?” I am no mind reader, but I can’t help, but feel they would be disappointed in the direction of our country.
Last night, we had a U.S. Presidential Debate between a former TV reality host who says outlandish things on a daily basis and someone who is a known liar that was under investigation for serious crimes who is also responsible for the Benghazi scandal when she was Secretary of State. What has happened to our country? This is the best the “Land of the Free” has to offer—seriously?
Neither of them fit the ideal presidential mold. What happened to the days of being polite and having an unwavering demeanor? Over the summer, I went to John F. Kennedy’s Presidential Library where there are interactive exhibits from JFK's early days of campaigning all the way to the end of his life. As I sat watching his speeches and debates with Nixon, I couldn’t help but realize we do not have any of that anymore; what we have are two loud mouths. Neither of them have the cool, steady hand and charismatic personality of President Kennedy.
As I was watching the debate last night, I realized that no matter who wins, America is losing. Neither of them convinced me that they are capable for this position and will represent America well. I still believe everyone should exercise their vote, and I will too, but America needs to learn from this election matchup. My hope is that this election will inspire someone who is charismatic, morally centered and has a cool hand to run for president four years from now.
