Education and school are two different things; despite them being connected.
Liking education means that you like gaining knowledge and being exposed to things that you've never been exposed to before, typically in a structured manner. Liking school means that you admire competition and discipline. You like being given tasks and completing them. You don't mind being disciplined and receiving consequences for poor decisions or negligence to your responsibilities.
I'm not here to say that liking either one makes you a "brainwashed slave to the system" or whatever. It's important to note the difference between the two though because whenever people say something along the lines of "I don't like school", those same people are often perceived as not smart. But not liking school doesn't mean you're not smart. And being good at school does not prove your intelligence, either.
School is designed for one type of person. A person who can balance everything; the perfect happy medium. It's for the person who has no trouble concentrating in a classroom setting, and who can pick up material immediately after given one or two examples. The person who doesn't mind sacrificing sleep for spending countless hours studying (if they need it). They also plan ahead. All the time.
Personally, I find it very difficult to focus in a class setting. For me to learn any material, I need to learn by myself either in a.) the silent zone of the library or b.) in the comfort of my dorm with sugary coffee and my essential oil diffuser (preferably lavender). (I just realized I sounded really pretentious. I'm sorry. I just really like lavender essential oil). Anyways, it also takes me a while to learn things. Whenever I sat in physics and the instructor would lecture, give one example, and then give us a group problem, I would be so lost and I wouldn't know what to do or how to start, even though I paid attention the whole time. I'm not blaming the instructor or the structure of the class at all though, but I think it's important to note that people learn in different ways at different paces.
The message I got from school was that "if you are different from the system, then you're considered below average/not intelligent", which obviously really messed me up. I need to learn things at my own slow pace by myself; that's how I function. Since I'm a poor test taker, and I have struggled with reading and math skills since I was really young, I grew up believeing that I was stupid
I don't think the entire education system is messed up and needs to change according to my comfortability or pace; I mean, there are office hours and other academic resources for a reason. I wrote this piece because it's imprtant for others out there to know that there is nothing wrong with you if you find school difficult or hard to keep up with. You are not less intelligent than everyone else in your classes.
