Halloween is one of the best holidays. Halloween is an entire month of scented candles, pumpkin spiced lattes, and binge-watching spooky-themed movies. It's a month of letting you inner child run wild and succumbing to your childish wishes. People can binge candy, decorate pumpkins, run through corn mazes, and eat as many pumpkin flavored things as humanly possible. Even though this pandemic has taken a lot from us, it will not take our Halloween spirit.
1. Us
This is one of my favorite scary movies of all time. I still have a fear that if I look out my window, I might see a group of people standing outside. Not only are there moments that will have your heart racing, but as a film itself, it is perfectly written, directed, and acting. I still don't understand why Lupita wasn't nominated.
Lights Out
This is another one of my favorite scary movies, and is probably tied for first with the movie "Us". I feel that this movie is very underappreciated. It has amazing characters who you root for and a scary storyline that has you on the edge of your seat.
3. The Woman in Black
"Woman in Black" is one of the first scary movies that I saw in theaters. It will always hold a special place in my heart and to this day, I still get scared by the jump scares. Also, I love Daniel Radcliffe in this movie.
4. Hell House
For being a low budget movie, this movie is really good. I found this movie randomly and honestly, I was very surprised at how much I liked it. It is filmed from a documentary-style point of view which adds a scary layer to the plot line. You never know where the story is going to go. It starts light-hearted, but as the story progresses, you realize why it's called "Hell House".
5. The Conjuring
I am a huge fan of the creators behind these movies and love most of the movies they make. "The Conjuring" is my favorite out of all them, and is a really good scary movie. It has everything you want from a scary movie: creepy children, ghost hunters, and jump scares.
6. Annabelle
Any movie that has a doll in it is bound to scare me and "Annabelle" is the perfect example. Dolls that are from a certain time period are creepy, and I will never understand why anyone would want them as toys. This movie has a creepy plot and a creepy doll. After watching this movie, I began second guessing where I left Funko pops.
7. Coraline
Tim Burton is the king of spooky movies, but my all-time favorite of his is "Coraline." This movie not only sets the stage with creepy animation, but it gets progressively scarier as the movie progresses. Any plot that has you second guessing characters and their motives is destined to get you into the spooky spirit.
8. Casper
This is a sweet movie that will remind you of the days when you could watch every day of Disney's Monstober. I love Casper and as a child, just wanted him to be happy. It's a movie that caters to your childhood spirit and the first crush that we have all experienced. Also, I love Christina Ricci in this movie.
9. Young Frankenstein
Every year, my family gathers on the couch to watch "Young Frankenstein" because it's a family tradition. It plays off the classic story of Frankenstein and adds a layer of stupid comedy. If you have never seen this movie, I highly recommended it. This is the one movie we never miss because without a doubt, we always end up with tears of laughter.
10. The Twilight Zone: Original TV Series
This is one form of entertainment that my dad always asks us to watch. This was my dad's favorite show growing up, and it one of the few things that gets my dad in the spooky mood. I remember the first time my dad showed me this. I was totally blown away by it. It's a show that caters to your mind through psychological scares. This show causes you to find the deeper message within each episode while also providing scary images like ventriloquist dolls.
Happy spooky season!
