Let’s start by saying that “Divide” may just be Ed Sheeran's best album yet. He has perfect pop anthems (“Shape Of You”, “New Man”), beloved love-song-ballads (“Perfect”, “Hearts Don’t Break Around Here”, “How Would You Feel (Paean)”), rap-like anthems (“Eraser”), and of course, some songs that break your heart (“Happier”, “Supermarket Flowers”, “Save Myself”). He even threw some tropical and foreign-feeling songs in there too (“Galway Girl”, “Barcelona”, “Bibia Be Ye Ye”, “Nancy Mulligan”). And then last but not least, three of my personal favorite jams “Dive”, “What Do I Know?” and “Castle On The Hill”.
With having an album filled with such alternating styles, it’s impossible to not be completely obsessed. Hell, it’ll probably be all I listen to for a long, long time. With all of these alternating styles, you are blessed with alternating emotions. Some songs make you grin ear to ear, some make you want to cry, some make you want to dance. But that is the beauty of “Divide” – it makes you feel.
But what does it make you feel, exactly?
You feel like a badass.
“Eraser”
The album begins with a rap-like song, that makes you want to learn all the words and become the rap-God you’ve always wanted to be.
You feel content.
“Castle on the Hill”
I will stand by my belief that this song makes you feel as content as you could possibly feel. With a beat that pumps you up, and words that calm you down, it’s perfect.
“What Do I Know?”
One of my favorites on the album. Ed’s personality and love for happiness shines through this song. It makes you wish to be happy. And with the lyrics and the calming beat, it definitely brings a smile to your face.
You feel empowered… Kind of.
“Dive”
The most soulful song of the entire album. With insane high notes and pure talent shining through, it’s no wonder why this song is a fan favorite. “So don’t call me baby unless you mean it. Don’t tell me you need me if you don’t believe it.” Pure empowerment… Am I right?!
You feel like jamming.
“Shape of You”, “Galway Girl”, and “New Man”
The most jam worthy songs of the entire album. Each song being the type of song that you can’t wait to learn all the words to and belt out.
You feel in love.
“Perfect”, “Hearts Don’t Break Around Here”, and “How Would You Feel (Paean)."
And people thought “Thinking Out Loud” was one of the best love songs… Well, let’s just say you haven’t heard anything yet. Each of these songs paint the perfect picture of love.
You feel sad.
“Happier”, “Supermarket Flowers”, and “Save Myself."
Ok, Ed. Just tear my heart out and stomp on it. IT’S FINE.
You feel tropical.
“Barcelona”, “Bibia Be Ye Ye”, and “Nancy Mulligan”
It is clear that Ed’s traveling during his hiatus enhanced his musical talent. Tropical beats are rubbed off onto these specific three songs – bringing us to warm weather and a positive attitude.
You feel extremely happy.
As a whole, this album makes you feel extremely happy. Happy that an album could make you feel so many emotions. Happy that this new album was able to exceed any expectations that you had for it, and that Ed was able to out-do himself with this third album. “Divide” may just be one of the best albums he has released and I am already so excited for the future albums to come.
I hereby declare March 3rd as “National Divide Day” because I am pretty sure we will all be able to feel a sense of happiness whenever we are reminded of the first time we ever heard “Divide”… I know I’ll be able to.
