EC3 triumphantly returned to the WWE in January of this year. Debuting in the wrestling world in 2002, Carter made his way to WWE for the first time in 2009 in the developmental territory that was FCW. He would go on to perform as Derrick Bateman (RIP), and capture the WWE Universe with his uncanny charisma. EC3 found his calling elsewhere in 2013.
In September of 2013, Ethan Carter the third was born, shining light on an athlete we had never seen before. The rich, spoiled, uppity nephew of then-president, Dixie Carter, EC3 formed alliances with Rockstar Spud that stayed for the duration of his time in TNA. While in TNA, Carter feuded with the likes of Sting, Kurt Angle, Matt Hardy, Bully Ray, and other rising stars of his generation. Carter captured the tag team championship briefcase in Feast or Fired, the World title twice, and the Grand Championship, before his departure earlier this year.
When the camera panned to EC3 in the crowd for TAKEOVER: Philadelphia, it was confirmed Ethan had left IMPACT and headed home to start over with the WWE, maybe with a more mature and understanding approach than before. Carter made his debut on NXT to cut one of his iconic promos during William Regal's debut in the North American Championship. Regal granted Ethan his wish and made him a part of the ladder match that would determine the inaugural champion. Carter's first in-ring performance was unsuccessful, but gave the world a reason to know the name EC3.
Since then, per NXT usual, Carter has had a few moments but nothing too captivating, yet. He had a match last week with NXT guest Raul Mendoza. While NXT is being slow to push EC3, there is no doubt he is one of the most interesting wrestlers on the scene today.
His mic skills are unprecedented with an ego to match, and he's strong and chiseled (only adding to his narcissistic tendencies). Even when designed to be a heel, he has a cult following that gets the crowd behind him over and over again. EC3's move set is simple, but it works for him. I won't argue he's one of the best technical wrestlers today, but a move set is just one of many parts in a good wrestler.
Adam Cole proved victorious in the ladder match, capturing the North American Championship, but since then has occupied with Pete Dunne. No clear plan has been set for the title, but I think it's safe to say we'll see Ethan challenging for the belt before the end of the summer, maybe even rising to Aleister Black's World Championship. Ethan can stand toe to toe with the best of them, and has wins over some of the best in the world. Let's just hope WWE realizes they're holding one of the best in the business. I would even say EC3 is in the top 1%.
EC3 is undoubtedly a name to watch for the remainder of the year and heading into next year. He is out to prove he is not just the top guy here, or there, but anywhere.
