Whenever you walk to class, do you ever overhear conversations between the students you pass along the way? Of course you have, but have you heard anyone say something completely random or strange? You'd be lying if you say you haven't. I've definitely listened to some interesting things said on campus. Some of which have stuck to my brain.
Last semester, I took a poetry writing class. As a writing prompt, my professor simply wanted my classmates and I to write a poem on the conversations we heard around us. Hearing weird stuff was a total bonus. All we had to do was scribble down what we heard and put it into several stanzas. Pretty easy, right?
It was a fun assignment, and my classmates had a lot of interesting stuff to share. My favorite was a question that one of my poetry buddies overheard at our campus' Starbucks the day before: "Can I get that kid-flavored?" Oh...okay.
I wrote this poem because I have heard so many unique things in just the past two weeks of the current semester. I'm not sure if my peers had spent too much time in the sun during the summer, or if the high school to college transition was eating the brains of the freshman. Or both.
So, here's the finished masterpiece. I've titled it "Eavesdropping":
What's your favorite organ?
The liver, of course.
Stop fingering my holes.
But I like it.
That's not an exit.
It even says so on the door.
It's nine forty one.
I wasn't sleeping.
I studied the first paragraph
And was like "wow."
What exercise?
That was due today?
My favorite food is Alfredo.
Of course it is.
This pizza is terrible.
It's cardboard, isn't it?
I, like, knew she was done,
But she wasn't.
Flynn Rider?
Yes! Flynn Rider!
