'Do you remember the 21st night of September? Love was changing the mind of pretenders' is part of the verse in American band Earth, Wind & Fire's most iconic song called "September" released in September 1978. Los Angeles declared September 21 Earth Wind & Fire Day. Marqueece Harris-Dawson who is the councilman invited the band to the L.A city hall to celebrate earlier this month. Ralph Johnson, Philip Bailey, and Verdine White came to celebrate their accomplishments.Maurice White who founded Earth Wind & Fire passed away in 2016.
Earth Wind & Fire formed in 1969 in Chicago and went to Los Angeles to start their music career. The LA City Council also organized a meet-and-greet for fans so they could get their picture taken with Johnson, Philip Bailey and Verdine White. Despite Los Angeles making this special day for the band, others around the country have deemed it a special day. People can and have been replaying this song over and over again. In fact, a residential advisor in my university planned a pizza party on the night of September 21 and the popular tune of September was played on repeat for the duration of the party.
Any small events like that help to make the 21st night of September a hit. The band also has other hits like "Shining Star" and "After the Love Has Gone" throughout the 70s and 80s. Not only dedicating a day for Earth Wind & Fire, and dance parties are some of the ways to celebrate this special day. Social media and the Internet also play a key role in welcoming the song to the hearts of their audiences. The Internet is flooded with various memes and jokes on the special song which gives even more publicity to this band. The song September has a different meaning for everyone since the song talks about having a good time on the night of Sept. 21. A good night can be characterized in different ways which is one reason why I think this song is still relevent today in 2019.
