If you care about the environment, then April 22 will be extremely important. Not only is it a Friday, but it is also Earth Day! It may have not crossed your mind, since it is not the most famous of holidays, but now that you're aware, you may be asking, What is Earth Day? Why do we have it? How can I celebrate Earth Day? Look no further, my friend.
Earth Day originated in 1970, and was created by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, nicknamed the Conservation Governor (http://tinyurl.com/gqxq4c9). It was created to bring awareness of how we were treating our environment, and how our small negative effects were making large impacts. This holiday was made to specifically talk about air and water pollution, but has since expanded to the entire sphere of environmental damage. By making an official holiday, it could give a constant platform to spread awareness, knowledge, and practices that will help lessen the damage we have done.
Earth Day has an official website: http://www.earthday.org/earth-day/. It gives opportunities to get involved in eco-friendly activities. No matter where you are, there is something that you can do that can make an impact on the environment for the better. These activities can be done as a community, or as an individual.
Once you've challenged yourself and those who around you to commit to one day of activities, try repeating that activity once a week. Once you feel comfortable doing it once a week, increase it to twice a week, and so on. You'll find yourself easily adapting to this new pattern, and this new pattern will not only be beneficial to your health, but also the environment! You have nothing to lose! So go out there and make a difference in your life and the Earth.
