Everyone knows that Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world, but what exactly makes French style universally coveted? And more importantly, how can I incorporate it into my wardrobe this holiday season?
During my visit to France last Christmas, I noticed a few consistent qualities among the outfits of the locals.
The individual pieces of a French outfit are surprisingly simple. Most outfits are comprised of neutral colors and wardrobe staples that would be familiar to most women, yet somehow these outfits are incredibly pleasing to the eye.
So what’s the difference?
The French seem to have an innate understanding of how to balance opposing pieces. A feminine, silky blouse will be paired with an oversized men’s blazer. Heavy oversized sweaters are donned over checked miniskirts. This playful diversity exudes a “je ne sais quoi” sort of elegance.
Parisians maintain their place as style icons due to what they reject. Gaudy labels, distracting text, rips, and headache-inducing patterns will not be found in a typical French wardrobe. French girls know that they are not billboards, and have no reason to dress like one.
However, this isn’t to say that French fashion is boring.
On the contrary, the understated edge pushes the boundaries in an impactful way. Trends are found in accessories, not staples, giving them a place in the spotlight without needing to compete with other fashion statements. Hats, bags, shoes, scarves, and layered outerwear act as the focal points of the ensemble. Hair and makeup are also styled modestly so the simplicity of the ensemble can shine.
As a whole, French style can be summed up as the sophisticated version of “I woke up like this.”
