Yes, it's pretty cold in Florida. In fact, it was actually snowing in northern Florida just a few days ago. Now, I'm from Ohio originally, and I'm not saying we're experiencing as brutal of a winter as the north is, but it's been pretty bad. There is always a lot of panic in Florida when the temperature drops below 60 degrees, and people don't usually know how to respond -- especially when it comes to picking an outfit. The biggest problem is that most Floridians don't even own winter coats or heavy jackets because we honestly never need them... usually.
Well, since I still have my Ohioan wardrobe, for the most part, I am making a list of ways to dress for cold weather to assure you won't catch a nasty cold or the flu. Here are some essentials you'll want to pick up for these chilly months ahead.
1. Mittens.
You may not be used to wearing mittens, and you probably don't own a pair (unless you're an avid traveler), but they make a huge difference in plunging temperatures. You'll feel the painful chill in your hands before anything else while outside, and it is truly the worst feeling. Make sure to invest in some thick and comfy mittens, and it doesn't hurt to get some stylish ones. They even make touchscreen friendly mittens that you can wear while using a smartphone or laptop.
2. A winter coat.
I wouldn't spend an arm and a leg on a winter coat because Florida doesn't get too cold often or for very long. However, buying a decent coat from somewhere such as Burlington Coat Factory or Kohl's isn't a bad idea. Some early mornings and late nights can get pretty bitter, and you'll want something more than a light jacket just in case.
3. Thick socks.
This is a winter essential that is often overlooked. Jeans or leggings aren't going to keep you warm in frigid temperatures, so throwing on a thick pair of knee-high socks underneath can make a huge difference. You could also purchase leg warmers if that's more your style.
4. Hats with ear covers.
Another problem area in cold temperatures is the ears. Your ears will get so red and cold so fast in winter weather. Luckily, there are some pretty cool hats on the market that have adjustable flaps to cover your ears and keep them warm and away from frostbite.
5. Boots.
Boots are another great investment for the winter months. They will keep your feet warm while also giving you stylistic freedom and extra coverage from the brutal chills. Whether they're soft cotton on the inside or leather, you can't go wrong with a nice pair of boots for the winter.
Hopefully, these tips can help you plan your winter wardrobe for these frosty months in Florida (that's not something you hear often).
