The Double Blue and Gold

The Double Blue and Gold

As "Perfection Week" for Fall Recruitment comes to a close, I'm reminiscent of why I chose Alpha Xi Delta one short year ago. Though these three Greek letters do not seem like much to outsiders, they hold a deep meaning that only initiated sisters can begin to understand.

Through this week of voice-shattering chanting and never-ending crafting, I am reminded of my time as a Potential New Member. I remember being in awe of the seemingly perfect, barbie-looking women who gracefully strutted out of extravagantly decorated houses in matching outfits, chanting songs that would be embedded in my head for the remainder of the day. I recall having conversation after conversation about the same stuff at different houses. For example the typical surface level questions of, "What's your major?" and "Where are you from?". But, one house stood out, and I now call that place my home.

After three rounds of recruitment, I was left with the last night of that mind-boggling week: Preference Night. Now, I look back, amazed at how one incredibly hot night could change my life forever. That night, I was rushed by a girl who no longer asked me what I was majoring in, or where I was from. Instead, I found a friend. I found a friend who would be holding my notifier as I ran to her on Bid Day. I found a friend who would be my New Member "Mom," and would guide me until initiation. Now, I have the privilege to call that friend my Grand-Big.

In Alpha Xi Delta, I found not only letters to wear and socials to attend. Instead, I gained a home, a place to belong, and lifelong friends. I became a partner of an amazing philanthropy that funds research to help the 1 in 68 American children diagnosed with Autism. I was given a house to run to when it seems like everything is falling apart, and friends to be there to pick up the pieces and put me back together. But, most importantly, I found a group of well-rounded women who I am not just able to call my sisters, but girls who live up to that title every single day.

All and all, I am incredibly thankful for my commitment to my sorority. As recruitment grows nearer, I encourage every PNM to follow their heart. I did, and I ended up with bridesmaids, self-confidence, and a forever home in Alpha Xi Delta.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
