The Dos And Don'ts Of Battling Rush Week Stress
Abigail Wideman

Rush week is approaching so quickly, and bid day 2017 is just around the corner! I cannot believe it has already been that long since I went through rush week have already been a part of such an amazing organization for nearly a year now. Looking back a year later, I still clearly remember the various stresses that I was feeling as that exciting week quickly approached, and I wish that I wouldn't have stressed about all of the little things that I did. This article goes out to the girls rushing in the upcoming fall, I hope if you read this I can ease your mind a little bit!

"Am I too dressed up?"

Don't stress about this! You would much rather be a little overdressed, than underdressed. Being overdressed just shows how much effort and thought that you put into the first impression that the houses you are visiting will have of you.

"What if none of the sororities like me?"

You are bound to find the right house that is meant for you! Don't stress about it, well maybe a little. There may be cuts and disappointments on the way, but you will end up exactly where you're meant to be. The house and girls that you are supposed to end up with will find you and stand out the most as the week goes on. You will hear this said many times during rush week but, TRUST THE SYSTEM.

"What if my hair falls/gets frizzy? I'm so sweaty, I hope they don't notice."

Don't worry, girl! odds are if your hair is falling or frizzy, ours is too! We know it's hot outside, and if you're in College Station, it's probably humid as well. We were in your shoes once, always remember that.

"Is it okay to name drop? Will they think I'm weird for knowing someone already?"

No! Name dropping is not a bad thing, and we don't think you're creepy. Mutual friends can be an easy and comfortable common factor.

"My friends think the chapters I like aren't as good as the ones they like. What should I do?"

Follow your heart, not your friend, and don't listen to what anyone else has to say. College is a completely different experience from high school, and what your friends think/do don't matter! If you feel like you belong somewhere, and your friend is going in the opposite direction, that's perfectly fine! This experience is about YOU and the life long friends and relationships you will make over the next four years. These women you surround yourself with will help you grow and help shape you into the person you want to be after you leave college, so choose wisely.

"I like this girl's outfit, she is so pretty! The decorations are so nice, too! I'm gonna tell her I like it, or will she think I'm kissing up?"

Please tell us! We probably put just as much effort into our outfit and makeup as you did, and we've been planning our decorations out for months! Nothings wrong with a compliment.

"I am so nervous! I feel like these girls can tell — is that bad?"

We are just as nervous, if not more nervous than you are! It is our job to impress and captivate you just as much as it is your job to impress us! Being nervous means you care, which is extremely important throughout this process. Just take a deep breath, and do your best carry on a smooth conversation! The first couple of days are the most nerve-wracking, but by the end of the week you will have found your home, and the conversations will be smooth and genuine.

Greek life is one of the most amazing and rewarding things I have ever been a part of. While rush week can be stressful and overwhelming at times, but the the support system and friends that I have gained because of it are worth much more than a week of petty stress.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
