What you should know before you make plans for Halloween

Do's and Don'ts for College Halloween

We've made it to October which leads us to Halloween on the 31st. The days of going around and trick-or-treating are essentially over. Going around asking strangers for candy should end when you are finally in college. The college Halloween experience is much different and there are things to be wary of. Here is a nice list of Do's and Don'ts for college kids who want to enjoy their Halloween.

Do: Dress Up How You Want!

Have fun with your costume. Whether it is something relevant to today or something that you want to bring back have fun with it.

Don't: Assume a Girl is "Asking For It" Because She is Dressed as a "Sexy (Fill in the blank)"

Costume (or cosplay) is NOT consent. People are free to express themselves as they wish without having to feel violated. If you see a guy or guys harassing a girl or girls because of what they're wearing speak up and take action. And the same goes if the roles are reversed. If girls are harassing a guy because of what he's wearing then also speak up.

Do: Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF

This is actually my second year doing this. This is the only time of the year that college kids can go around door-to-door asking people for money. It goes to a good cause and you still get to go out and "Trick-Or-Treat." Last year, I was still given candy so it still works out.

Don't: Trick-Or-Treat for Candy

Come on people. I get we're broke (Some more than others) but there are other (legal) ways to get food. It's for actual children not just college students who act like children.

Do: Hit Up a Party or Two (Safely)

It's alright to go out to a party dressed up in a costume and throw down. Just be safe about it. Don't go overboard (it's a school night) and look out for other people.

Don't: (I said it above) Go Overboard

First, it's a school night. Second, you have homework and other responsibilities. Third, every decision you make has a ripple effect. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. Don't be that guy who is known as the red ranger who couldn't hold his liquor.

Do: Pull Fun (and safe) Pranks on Your Friends

Halloween can also mean a good time for pranks. Personally, I never did on Halloween, but it can be a good time. The prank can be tied into your costume choice, your other friends' costumes and other variables. However, don't go too far.

Don't: Vandalize or Destroy Other People's Property as a "Prank"

It is irritating, irresponsible and just flat out rude. No one likes to have to call the police about vandalism or other nonsense. It's one of the busiest nights for police officers and a lot of them don't even get to be with their family. Cut everyone some slack and don't be that guy.

Do: If You're Broke Go Hit up a Thrift Store for Costume Pieces

You'll be surprised at what you can find. Just make sure it's a "nicer" thrift store and not too swanky.

Don't: Go as a "Broke College Student

That's literally the overwhelming majority of us so you're not scaring anyone.

Do: Have Fun

Whether you're sitting home with family, friends or others and watching a movie or two or going out to have a good time, just have fun. Halloween is meant to be a good time (Unlike the fourth Halloweentown movie) so make sure it's fun.

Don't: Just Sit Around and Do Nothing

Unless that's how you enjoy Halloween. Some people don't celebrate Halloween, which is fine, but try to have as much fun as possible. We all have responsibilities and should be adults but not like old people.

Just have fun with it. It's big for some people and not as much for others. Just go out there and do you!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
