Doors That Close

Doors That Close

In our life there are these doors, hallways of them really, that close and open. Each one a new place, a new face and a key of course. It’s kind of like an Alice thing, you know but in our own Wonderland. We are faced with thousands of doors but we are only given one key at a time and sometimes we think certain places, certain people, certain doors are right but the key doesn’t fit. Because the person who gives us the keys has other plans for us, other places we need to go first, other people we need to meet, and so, different doors.

Some places are hard, we can get shoved out the door as it closes quickly and abruptly. Leaving us feeling raw and confused, back in the hallway. But there are little glints of light beneath the crack of the door that tell us where to go next and we are left with a collection of keys dangling around our neck, stamped with words that spark a memory of the things we learned behind that door.

Behind some doors we can be misconceived by the meaning, we may think it’s good or even permanent but instead we are crushed when it turns sour and temporary. When all that we find behind the door is hurt or loss and we are left to slowly close the door behind us because what was inside turned out to be too hard to face anymore. But that was on purpose too, you were meant to feel the hurt that came with that door. You were meant to leave it and everything behind that door once you closed it and locked it shut. But that, that door, is a door that closes. And in closing it you are reminded that you don’t live there anymore. The ghosts of that door cannot follow you through the hallway and onto the next room, only the memories and the lessons learned.

And when we are left standing alone in a hallway with rows and rows of doors that file behind and ahead, but we are comforted by the crack in the door ahead, that is filled with light and guides our steps, into the warmth and out of the cold and onto the next step, the next door.

In our life, these are these doors. Some of them close, some open. And with each key we obtain around our neck, we gain the memories of our experiences, adventures, hardships and triumphs. Just another door, another place, another face.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
