I'm a self-admitted clothing addict. I'm totally OK with this. I own dresses, Nike shorts, crop tops, hoodies, skirts, skinny jeans, the whole nine yards. But don't ever tell me what I should wear.
Recently, people have been writing about how girls shouldn't wear Nike shorts and oversized t-shirts. People say that we shouldn't go outside like we're going to the gym.
I have one thing to say: Back off.
No one — and I repeat, no one — has the right to tell anyone what they should wear. Ever. If I want to wear hoodies, oversized t-shirts, and Nike shorts, then I can definitely do that. If I want to dress to the 9s in a dress and heels when I'm going to the grocery store, that is totally okay.
Don't tell me I can't wear Chacos because they're ugly. The same thing goes for Birkenstocks. Don't tell me that I look terrible when I go to class because I'm not wearing a face of makeup. On the flip side, don't tell me I look unnatural when I'm wearing a smokey eye in my 8 a.m. French lecture.
No one has any right to tell anyone what wear or what to look like. Stop telling me that I need to dress better because I'm not representing women well. Don't tell me I'm overdressed when I go to class. Just stop telling me that what I'm dressing isn't right. Because news flash: I could say the same thing back at you. Everyone has the right to wear whatever they want to, so I'll keep doing me and you can keep doing you.
