Last week I wrote an article about #RepealThe19th. Later that same day someone left a comment on the Facebook post that linked interested readers to my article.
This single comment then lead to a flurry of comments between the two of us that ended with me blocking him. After having done so I got to thinking about one comment in particular.
Since you brought up "the core principles this country is built on" let me remind you that this country was also founded on voting and democracy. Without voting and democracy there would be virtually no point to us having ever declared our independence from Great Britain. Our ancestors had no representatives in Parliament to vote on or discuss the laws that were being put in place. They felt so passionate about having a say in their lives and government that a war broke out. After having gained independence, white American men then automatically had the right to vote. After slavery was ended, African-American men were then given the right to vote. Women were not born with the right to vote nor was it given to them; instead they fought for it. They were put in jail, force fed and some even died fighting for this right.
There is a big difference between me saying you shouldn't say something and you saying no one should vote. You are talking about taking away a right. A right that if you had actually read my article you would know why it is so wrong to talk about taking it away. If you take away the right to vote I guarantee you that history would repeat itself-- only this time it would have greater consequences since you say no one should vote. When I say you shouldn't say that no one should vote I am not talking about taking away your right.
I know that you may never see this article and if you do, you probably won't read it.
