As many are well aware, last week in Toronto a man deliberately drove his van onto a busy sidewalk targeting innocent pedestrians. From this attack, 10 people were killed and several were left hospitalized.
And who is the man behind this? 25-year-old Alek Minassian.
After further research, many believe Minassian's actions to be part of the Incel movement. This Facebook post of his has been confirmed as authentic.
So, what is an Incel? Yeah, we are all wondering the same thing.
Incel is short for "involuntarily celibate." Incels are men that come together on the Internet to share their frustrations with not having sex. While some of these men are simply tired of feeling unworthy of women, many of them are filled with hatred.
But we cannot ignore one very significant factor - the term incel was actually coined by a Toronto woman in 1993. This term was never intended to fuel hatred or violence. It began as a movement and safe place for those that felt like they couldn't belong anywhere.
Just like too many things in life, this term was co-opted by men in more recent years.
Often, they make hateful posts on forums like incels.me referring to "Chads" and "Stacys." Chad is the name they've given to the men that constantly pull girls -- the typical jock, Ken-like guy. Stacy refers to the Barbie-like women that obsess over Chads; they are the girls that will have sex with only Chads.
But here's the real kicker -- Incels believe that women owe them sex, that they are being deprived of a basic human right.
Okay, but this kinda sounds like a lot of guys I've interacted with... So, what is the difference between an Incel and the average college boy?
Incels simply say what a lot of guys are thinking.
There is an argument that Incels are often violent, Alek Minassian for instance. The average college boy isn't violent, right? Wrong.
What do we call the boys that force our heads toward their crotch? What about the boys that don't know how to take no for an answer? The boys that pin us down before we can even utter out that we are virgins?
So women, raise your hand if you've ever received an unsolicited dick pic. Raise your hand if you've then been asked: "What do you think?" Wave that damn hand in the air if you've then been hit with the, "Aren't you going to send anything back?"
Believe it or not, we do not sit around thinking: Oh I really hope he sends me a dick pic while I'm in the middle of class. More than anything I want to tell him how pristine his penis is. That aggressive Snapchat really makes me want to get naked right now and send a picture his way!
Just because you think I owe you sex, doesn't mean I do.
Girls, we have become pawns in an Incel nation. He may not sit behind a computer screen posting to a Reddit forum or drive a van onto a sidewalk, but that doesn't mean he doesn't think he's entitled to sex.
If it thinks like an Incel and acts like an Incel, it must be an Incel.
