There are so many opportunities available in college. Tons of majors and classes are offered, and there are a seemingly endless number of clubs and extracurriculars. In addition to this, there are also lots of job and internship opportunities for students to make money and/or gain valuable experience.
It's easy to get caught up in all the activities out there and feel like you have to be involved in EVERYTHING. However, this is not the smart way to go; as classes get going and exams start up, you may have realized you bit off more than you can chew.
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of everything offered. There are probably many clubs and activities that interest you, and you may sign up for them without even thinking. And when it comes to classes, you may be tempted to max the number of credits you take just so you can get out early, or to take some electives that interest you. All of these different activities can cause you to overbook yourself; you may find yourself struggling to keep up with schoolwork or running between different things.
Overbooking yourself and doing as much as you can physically handle may seem like a good idea. You get to do everything that interests you and gain a ton of experience for your resume; however, this is wrong. Doing more than you can handle will only lead to stress, exhaustion, and poor health. I've been that person; we all have.
We all want to do as much as we can and make the most of our experience. But we can only take so much. With the weather changing and cold and flu season impending upon us, we have to make sure we are taking care of our health, both physically and mentally.
If you are feeling overwhelmed and like you are doing too much, take a minute to evaluate what's important to you. Do you really need to do five extracurriculars while working a job and taking 16 credit hours? Probably not. Once what you are doing is negatively affected your mental health, you need to reevaluate. This isn't to say that you should just do nothing; if you can effectively time and stress manage a bunch of different activities, great! But everyone is different in what they can manage. And remember, your well-being is the most important thing.
Should you find yourself involved in too much and feeling overwhelmed, remember that it's perfectly fine to leave something. Prioritize what matters the most and what you probably don't need to do, like that baking club you joined on a whim.
College is meant to be challenging and offer new experiences. So challenge yourself. Try something new. Follow your passions. But don't do it to the point where it compromises your health. Life is all balance; find what you can handle, and don't push yourself.
