From the moment we were old enough to talk, we told our parents about our dreams to be astronauts or movie stars. They encouraged us to live out those dreams because they raised us to believe that anything is possible. As the years pass, those dreams become afterthoughts that we place in the back of our mind. Why is that?
When we start to become conscious of the world and how it works, our dreams and ambitions shift. Your brother no longer thinks he can be an MLB player so he settles for an office job just like your father. We become a little more realistic the more we grow up, it's just the way the world works.
We stop aiming to be these impossible people because at one point someone told us those dreams were impossible. People believe that hard work is unachievable, so it stops them from striving towards something they used to want so badly. It doesn't just happen when we are kids. When we try to decide on a university or a major, every family member has an opinion about it. So when does the cycle end?
Stop letting other people's insecurities and low levels of self confidence stop you from traveling the world or auditioning for major roles in movies. The athletes you cheer for at games, and the actors you see on television didn't get to where they are today by giving up when someone told them to aim for a realistic career, now did they?
Do not let anybody tell you that your major will not get you a well paying job. Do not let anybody tell you that you will never make enough money to live in a nice apartment in the middle of downtown. Do not let anybody tell you that traveling to every country in the world is impossible and a waste of money. Do not let anyone tell you that your dreams are too big, and don't ever make them smaller.
