I Swore I'd Never Join A Sorority, Until I Did

I Swore I'd Never Join A Sorority, Until I Did
Gustavus Tri Sigma Chapter

We have all seen them, the movies and television shows that depict Greek life students on college campuses as all party, wild, crazy people. I mean hey, from the stories I've heard I'd believe them too. Truth is, man, was I wrong for thinking this way.

At my college, our Greek life doesn't have any official housing and you aren't able to join until your sophomore year. I told myself that I would not join these so-called "partygoers," and vowed to never join a sorority.

My roommate and friend at the time dragged me along to manydifferent recruitment events throughout our first year on the hill. While the girls were nice, warm, and welcoming, I honestly just couldn't see myself fitting in. I straight up said that I would not be joining any of the sororities we visited.

Sophomore year arrived and yet again I went along with my roommate to the many recruitment events, however, something changed and I don't know when. Sitting in and listening to the many different philanthropies, sisterhood events, and overall purpose of some of the Greek organizations made me think that, maybe, I was too quick to judge.

Not too many days later, I started to really enjoy being surrounded with such amazing people. I found out that I had lots in common and fell in love with one specific Greek organization. I was a little bit hesitant and I'm not going to lie, nervous to join having seen and heard so many different things about Greek life. What I found instead was respect, honesty, and an instant connection like no other.

I may still be in the process of earning my full title, however, I am proud to say that I will forever be a Tri Sigma.

As a Tri Sigma, I have found a wonderful group of girls who constantly offer support, appreciation, and encouragement to become the best that I can be. As a member, one is held to high standards such as making sure your grades are kept up and you are always being a supportive and positive leader in the community.

If someone happens to be struggling with grades, time management, or literally anything else, there is always someone who is willing to help guide you in the right direction.

As a member of a national sorority, not only do you have connections within your college community, but you have connections all across the country. Anywhere that you go, if there happens to be a Tri Sigma chapter, you are able to communicate and join up with these members. To me, this is one of the coolest things; knowing I have support wherever I go.

Tri Sigma Greek letters are not just handed out. Our letters have to be earned. One must show that they understand and will uphold the values of their sorority. This shows the dedication and honor you will give to all of your fellow Sigmas; until death do us part.

All in all, what I am trying to say is that not all Greek life is what you see in the movies.

I found a forever set of friends, or sisters, for the rest of my life. I am proud to be a Tri Sigma. Never judge a book by its cover.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
