Don't go to a College Career Fair

Multiple interviews in one day? Packed rooms of impressionable employers? Countless handouts constantly shoved into paper-juggling hands? Who would ever inflict that kind of suffering on themselves?

Oh, well, I can think of a few people who would go through that: pro-active students, ambitious entrepreneurs, curious, goal-driven freshmen - the list goes on!

At its core, career fairs are intimidating. There is no way getting around that. Walking through those doors, you step into this building amassing countless famous brands and successful companies all waiting to essentially strip you down as a person in a meager handful of minutes to see if you fit their business' criteria for a volunteer, an intern, or even an employee. So there is no shame in being apprehensive and wanting to run out the door or from the opportunity at first. It is understandable. No one wants to throw themselves at countless strangers to be judged.

However, unless you've been networking for a long time or have decent connections that can get you 100% to where you want to be after college - then career fairs are and should be your first, tangible jump into the adult world. Career fairs, while daunting, will also give you the exposure and foundation you need in order to be successful in your future.

Preparing for a career fair, for example, requires going through some kind of revision of your resume, and mock interviews - two very important things that will either make or break you in your pursuit of a career, internship, or volunteering opportunity. How? Well, for example, a career resume is different from a college application resume because for the most part, companies no longer care about what you did or the awards you got in high school. They are looking for real - "adult" world activities and accomplishments now. The only catch is, freshmen are typically given some leniency over this as its usually understood that they have only dipped their feet into the actual professional world. So if you are planning on attending a career fair, it is best to confer with a career counselor or an advisor to make sure your format and content is up to par.

As for mock interviews, it is also best to talk to your college counselor and advisors as well. There are other ways of prepping for this, yes, but ideally they are the best to turn to for advice on how to talk to professional and catch their interest; you do not want to be the one to be wasting a recruiter's time with pointless chatter.

Besides that, you should also consider what you are planning to wear at a career fair; your clothes are a reflection of who you might be. So it's better to dress and impress before you step through the doors and endure the countless interviews you are about to go through. Because at the end of the day, they will not only build your experience on how to handle interviews, but they will also build on your confidence.

And confidence sells, doesn't it?

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
