Falling in love in college is difficult, to say the least, from the common truth of having to deal with long distance to the pressures of today's hookup culture. From issues with social media to dealing with meeting your next man on Tinder, I'm here to discuss the struggles today's college students experience when falling in love whether you are ready to settle down, like I am, or not.
Hookup Culture
In college, it's difficult to not get caught up in what people call "hookup culture." According to Wikipedia, hookup culture is "one that accepts and encourages casual sexual encounters, including one-night stands and other related activity, which focus on physical pleasure without necessarily including emotional bonding or long-term commitment." This is amplified by college students going out on weekends to fraternity parties with alcohol flowing left and right as well as guys relying on pornography for the ideas of what a relationship should be like.
Most college guys are looking for a side piece to take back to their room rather than a girl to take home to their mom. Hookup culture means cheating is pretty prevalent in today's college society because the dating culture is surrounded by sex.
Long distance
When you do find a great partner, chances are they are miles away especially when you're in college. A lot of people find this to be true when they stay with their high school relationship. I'm currently in my third long distance relationship and all I have to say is thank the lord I have my car with me at my college and praise the lord for facetime, texting, and Snapchat.
I wish my man and I went to the same college, but I'm just glad we live in the same city when we are both home for breaks, but being in different states for most of our relationship is pretty taxing on our bond.
Social Media
From having to see what girls are liking and commenting on your partner's posts on Instagram, to deciding to add each other as in a relationship with on Facebook social media is a big issue in college student's relationships. Personally, I get upset when I see girls that shouldn't be on my man's social media, like exes, and I can't imagine how relationships were before social media was invented.
How did psycho girlfriends like me find silly ways to get jealous without looking through who her man is following and seeing what girl's selfies he is liking?
Dating Apps
I think most of today's college kids have dealt with having to try out Tinder, Grindr, or Bumble because they're tired of being lonely and single. However, sometimes those dates turn out to be terrible and then you're scarred for life. Thankfully, my man and I have gotten over our tinder days and have known each other from high school.
From Tinder to guys texting girls at 3 a.m. asking, "are you up?" dating in college is hard, so good luck, kids.
