The highly anticipated Taylor Swift Netflix documentary has been viewable to the public since January 31st, and boy do I have some thoughts.
All positive of course because I love Taylor.
The documentary starts with a phone call where Taylor hears the news her latest video is not nominated for a Grammy. What is so heartbreaking is that you can feel the sadness Taylor feels because her first response is "I just need to write a better album".
Me personally, I love Reputation. I Did Something Bad? Iconic. Don't Blame Me? A bop. This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things? Super petty AND catchy. She went into hiding for a whole year and took three years to write the album. It made me truly so sad to hear her explain being hated by virtually every one on the Internet. What made me cry was that throughout her entire career since her first album, I have been a fan through and through. Even when she dated Harry Styles and my Directioner heart was so torn. So seeing her talk so badly of herself was sad because I looked up to her when I was younger, and in a way she felt like an older sister to me.
This documentary doesn't just dwell on the sad parts of Taylor's life, but it also briefly glosses over her relationship with Joe. While I wish she would have spilled more deets on their relationship, I have such a high amount of respect for them just loving each other in private. Taylor has always been under public scrutiny for being a serial dater, and whether or not she dates privately or publicly I will always support her. I will say them dating privately is so respectable because when you really love someone you don't need to be seen with them publicly to prove a point, you just want them.
My all time favorite part of the documentary was her talking about finally making public political statements. This is something she was always mercilessly ripped apart for either never saying enough, or now in todays case, she doesn't know what she's talking about or she's pandering and money hungry. To myself personally, I have never gotten this vibe and am in fact proud that she's making her voice heard. She's not doing it for any kind of gain, she just wants to influence young voters.
To wrap things off, I'm going to quote my favorite part from the documentary: "Sorry, was I loud...in my own house that I bought with the songs that I wrote...about my own life?"
