Each day, Penn State administers random surveillance testing for coronavirus to 1% of students and faculty. As of August 7th, 6,632 tests have been performed, and 73 students have tested positive.
Many students are taking the necessary precautions, but some have acted carelessly, throwing parties close to campus. The amount of positive cases among the students nearly doubled in the past week.
"Thirty-two Penn State students tested positive for the coronavirus between Friday, August 28, and Sunday, August 30."
In addition to the daily random surveillance testing, the university administered around 20,000 pre-arrival tests before the start of the semester. Considering they tested less than half of the student population, Penn State isn't doing enough.
I personally think they should have required everyone to be tested before returning to campus, as there could be many unrecorded positive cases. I know just a handful of people that were given the pre-arrival test, and I am not one of them. Even though I am from New York, I wasn't tested because my area is no longer considered high risk.
A better effort needs to be made by both the university and the students going forward. Penn State needs to up their testing, and students need to stop acting like we aren't in a global pandemic.
You can stay up to date with Penn State's coronavirus testing by checking out the COVID-19 Dashboard, which shows both symptomatic and asymptomatic testing results.
I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times, but I'll say it again. Wear a mask.
