Donald Trump's Immigration Plans
News Week

The newly elected President, Donald Trump, has some pretty intense views and desires for America. One of these is immigration. At first Trump said he wanted to deport these 11 billion undocumented immigrants in America. Trump has now said he wanted to deport 2 to 3 billion undocumented violent criminals.

Trump has also openly advocated for building a wall between Mexico and the United States. This will help control the large number of undocumented immigrants from coming into America. Here is the kicker; Mexico is going to pay for this.

I would like to point a couple of things out. First, why would Mexico be the one building this wall? That is just absolutely crazy. The United States is going to ask the country with a large number of undocumented immigrants coming from to build this wall for us. Yep, makes totally sense to me.

Second, let’s say that undocumented immigrants work picking lettuce for a farm. Lettuce sells about $1.39. The employer does not have to pay tax or social security for these undocumented workers. Though, they are paid under the table it may not be as much as minimum wage. So if Trump somehow deports all these people doing jobs Americans typically do not want to do then yes the is job availability. In all honesty, who wants to make a career of picking heads of lettuce for the rest of their life? Then if the employer hires documented individuals then they will have to pay taxes and social security and a hirer wage than what they were paying the undocumented workers. To compensate for this the price of lettuce could go up to $3.49. That is a two-dollar difference. Would you rather pay $1.39 or $3.49?

Some may argue that we are only talking about lettuce. There are people in the world that can hardly pay for the $1.39 lettuce, so if you increase the price then more people could become into poverty. Essentially the cost of living is going up but the wages for teachers or any other profession is not going up. This means that they are not getting paid more even though the cost of living is increasing. Just think about that.

Some people may not want to accept this argument but immigration does help our economy. Yes I do understand that our taxes are paying for them and they are not paying any, but just give it a chance. If we are paying these undocumented immigrants less than minimum wage but are putting their money back into the economy by being consumers, isn’t that helping us? Also they are working jobs that a lot of people do not want to work.

This is just something to think about. I do not have a biased opinion against immigration. However, please understand and keep an open mind to immigration. Just because someone else thinks something is bad does not mean it actually is.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
