A week has passed since I last touched on Trump's potential cabinet; you can read part one here.
While no major changes have occurred, a interesting meeting between long-time Bernie supporter Tulsi Gabbard and Donald Trump did take place. According to ABC, she is currently “under serious consideration” for various Cabinet positions in President-elect Donald Trump's administration; while this has yet to be completely set in stone, the meeting is a silver lining in what looks like to be at this point a miserable cabinet for the administration.
Retired Marine General James Mattis is currently the leading candidate to be Trump's Secretary of Defense. Mattis happens to be the general in charge of "COIN" or counter insurgency tactics. While his record is nearly spotless and has no blatant flaws like some other individuals so far in position to join Trump's cabinet, James "Mad Dog" Mattis did have one disturbing choice of words during a panel on activity in the middle east.
While I understand the danger Marines face and the mindset they must have in combat, his choice of words were still not exactly that of a professional and expert leader should possess. Having been on the record quoting "Actually it's quite fun to fight [the Taliban and ISIS], you know. It's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people”. Little crazy right? While this really is not enough to derail his potential cabinet position, it is something we should know about our potential Secretary of Defense.
Donald Trump's Interior Secretary is currently most likely to be handed to Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin. Republican Mary Fallin's name was mentioned a few times earlier in the year as a potential running mate for Donald Trump until Mike Pence was chosen.
Looking through Fallin's political history, I found two controversies. The first was over a statue of the Ten Commandments on capitol grounds in 2015. The Oklahoma supreme court ruled 7-2 the statue goes against the fundamental concept of the constitution regarding the separation of church and state. Despite this obvious and majority ruling, Fallin fought for an appeal and has continued the fight to restore the statue since. The second controversy was over lethal injection and the pushing for increased use of lethal injections despite a lack of tested drugs. This led to the botched execution of Clayton Lockett, who could not be sedated and writhed in pain for 43 minutes, where he then died of a heart attack. Despite Oklahoma supreme courts' ruling to stay the execution until tested drugs were available, Fallin immediately overruled it, leading to this failure. This alone should have been enough to make her lose her job due to incompetence; however, it seems she will end up with a promotion instead.
What a backwards country we live in.
The next position in Trump's cabinet is the Agriculture Secretary but has no leading candidate. While there is no one individual to dissect for this role, politico noted that president elect Donald Trump does have around 70 leaders on the agricultural advisory committee to choose from. No doubt the person to fill the position will come from somewhere inside this organization.
Billionaire investor Wilbur Ross, as pictured below, is most likely to be our next Commerce Secretary. Ross is a wealthy businessman who has dabbled in coal, steel and textiles, among other ventures. While it does not seem wise to elect billionaire businessmen to power when they could so easily use it skirt around legislation, Ross does not have that much of history to really break down. It is worth it to note that Ross served under former President Bill Clinton on the board of the U.S.-Russia Investment Fund.
In the coming weeks we will finalize all potential cabinet members for the next administration. Some positions currently have too many potential choices-- or too few. Understanding that Trump has never held a government office before being elected president, he may not have the entire cabinet recruited at the same pace as former presidents.
Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and give thanks that we can avoid having this thrown onto us until late January 2017.
