Donald Trump. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that he’s perhaps one of the most powerful and influential people alive right now. He is President of the United States after all.
The main issue when it comes to President Trump is that nobody seems to want to hold him accountable for his actions. After all, his presidency has been plagued with scandal, even before he was even elected.
Here is only a few things that Donald Trump has either done or been accused of doing:
1. He made fun of a disabled reporter (source).
2. He made his infamous “Grab them by the pussy” comment, which was then leaked on the Access Hollywood tape (source).
3. He called Haiti and African countries “shitholes” (source).
4. He refuses to release his tax returns (source).
5. He refused to condemn literal Nazis and refused to reject endorsement from David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK (source, source).
6. He allegedly paid a porn star hush money to keep quiet about the affair they allegedly had after First Lady Melania Trump gave birth to their son, and he is now being sued by said porn star (source).
7. He repeatedly attacks the press (source).
8. He has been accused by over a dozen women of sexual harassment and sexual assault (source).
9. He refused to put sanctions on Russia, even though Congress was overwhelmingly in favor of it (source).
10. He fires key government employees, such as the Secretary of State, over Twitter (source).
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. He has done or has been accused of doing all of this and so much more. Literally everything President Trump has done or been accused of doing would have disqualified anyone else for public office—let alone the presidency.
Yet, no matter how appalling Donald Trump’s words and actions are, he seems to be impervious to criticism. In fact, people jump to his defense.
Look, I get that no president has been perfect and no president has never been involved in a scandal, but Donald Trump needs to be held accountable for his actions.
Donald Trump is not above criticism just because he’s President of the United States. In fact, I would argue that because he’s president, he needs to be criticized and held accountable for his actions at a higher standard.
After all, he represents the United States to the rest of the world, and his awful actions and words are embarrassing.
What does that do to our image when we have a vulgar, crass, overgrown toddler that we refuse to hold accountable as our president? What kind of message does that send to the children who are watching? What kind of message does that send to future presidents and politicians?
Stop excusing President Trump’s actions. Stop defending him when he deserves the legitimate criticisms about his actions.
He’s ruining the U.S.’s reputation throughout the world. He’s setting a bad example for children and a bad example for all future Presidents. And he’s destroying the integrity that the Office of the President used to have.
He’s one of the most powerful and influential people in the world, and as President of the United States, he answers to us, the citizens of the United States. So, as his boss, We the People need to start holding him accountable.
It’s something we should have done from day one.
