Donald Trump Is Not Adolf Hitler

Why we must stop comparing.

Donald Trump Is Not Adolf Hitler

If you Google search “Donald Trump vs. Hitler," an appalling array of articles, videos and images that compare the two political figures come up. “Bill Maher Points Out How Frighteningly Similar Donald Trump Sounds To Hitler”; “Could Donald Trump Be the Next Hitler?”; “Louis C.K. On Donald Trump: ‘The Guy Is Hitler’” are just a few of the headlines that grace the first page of searches. People—including celebrities— are endorsing the idea that Trump, a hardheaded Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election, and his radical ideas about immigration, the treatment of Muslims and segregation reflect the ideals of Adolf Hitler, a German dictator who annihilated 12million human beings on account of their religion, appearance or opposition to his political motives. People are comparing a presidential candidate to an actual murderer. This is frightening, disturbing and above all upsetting. Although I personally question Trump’s rationale for America and his legitimacy for the presidency, I do not question that he is without a doubt nothinglike Hitler, and to see not only celebrities but also friends and colleagues so carelessly compare the two stirs a storm of frustration and sadness within me.

You may recall one of the photos that started it all: a side-by-side comparison of Trump and Hitler that spread through social media like a plague. Here it is again to refresh your memory:

Admittedly, yes, these two men have similar ideas—the one incredible distinction almost everyone is forgetting, however, is that Donald Trump is not out to slaughter millions of innocent people. While he gains an absurd amount of media attention from the absurdly racist and fascist things he sometimes says, he is in no way as much a threat to our nation as was Adolf Hitler to the entire world. Additionally, a comedian released a video this past Tuesday of him interviewing Trump supporters. In the video, he swaps out Trumps ideals for those of Hitler’s and, shockingly, people believe that Trump has said these things, indicating that they would agree with Hitler’s beliefs and notions. The video can be watched here.

Although this video, too, is disturbing in the sense that modern-day voters agree with Hitler-esque ideas, it is still incredibly inappropriate, and in any case, I highly doubt that these people felt the same way once they found out that they agreed with a 20th-century dictator who killed millions. The regard for all the innocent men, women and children who perished in death camps, the countless bodies piled up in the streets and in pits, the gassing and dehumanization of the Jewish people, the torturing of souls all religions alike—it is all replaced and forgotten by sheer ignorance when people compare Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.

We need to stop comparing Trump to Hilter now. It is incredibly unworldly and, quite frankly, un-American of us to make such a conclusion that because their perspectives seem similar, one will turn out to be like the other. Donald Trump is notAdolf Hitler. Indeed, he spouts hateful comments and political threats that might mimic some of Hitler’s own, but nevertheless, he is merely a blunt business man running for the presidency who says these things to gain attention and support. Even in the possible yet unnerving event that he does become president and the American population migrates to Canada, I doubt that what we’ll be escaping will be a murderous dictator. This comparison must cease immediately, along with the ignorance that fuels its entire existence.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
