10 Things to Do During College Snow Days

Snow Day: (noun) a day on which public schools or other institutions are closed due to heavy snow; a gift from God; the best school day(s) of the year, usually despised by those who have to work; an amazing day that includes sledding, snowball fights, and building snow tunnels; an unexpected escape from all schoolwork and classes; a day to relax; a day to binge watch your favorite shows on Netflix. In college, a snow day means getting to sleep in and play in the snow…along with a few other things…

1. Watch that Netflix show that has been sitting on your list for months.

Ask yourself, “If I don’t watch it now, when am I going to watch it?” If you decide against watching it, then you can also do a “List Purge,” just go through and delete the movies or shows that you’re never actually going to watch.

2. Plan your Spring Break!

Get together with your closest girlfriends and figure out a cheap trip to a location where you would all be interested in going. Once you figure out the destination, work out a budget - we are all poor college kids after all.

3. Go sledding - you did it as a kid, but you'll have more fun doing it now!

Even if you didn't bring a sled with you, find a replacement! Trash bags and cardboard boxes work really well! When we were kids, we went sledding with our parents and siblings, but now we can go whenever or wherever we want with our closest friends!

4. Paint the snow (with all the colors of the wind)

Mix some water and food coloring and let out your inner Bob Ross! Don't forget to take some pictures because you best believe that you're going to post it in Instagram with the most #blessed hashtags.

5. FaceTime a friend!

Let's face it, you miss talking with your hometown best friend, but you just haven't had the time. Well now is the time to do it, even if it's just for a few seconds or for a few hours!

6. Play a game!

Put your phone down and pull out a game! Any game will do, but I would highly recommend Cards Against Humanity!

7. Try the exercises that have been sitting in your Pinterest boards!

If you haven't gotten the chance to do the exercises yet, then now is the time! If you don't try them, then they're just going to keep collecting virtual dust!

8. Catch up on same reading!

You've only been reading for this class and that class, so now is the time to do the reading that you've actually been wanting to do...Those Nicholas Sparks books aren't going to read themselves.

9. Take a nap...because why not?!

I'm in college, I enjoy my naps, and I don't need anyone or anything waking me up!

10. Catch up on the work you've been avoiding...or not

Your mom is going to suggest this, your dad is going to suggest this, even your grandparents are probably going to suggest this....but let's be honest, are you actually going to do it?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
