This past week was Suicide Prevention Week, and the whole month of September is dedicated to suicide awareness. That is so important. Let that sink in.
Depression is real and suicidal thoughts do exist. If someone tells you they are struggling, you need to believe that.
They are struggling.
It's hard to imagine someone you love wishing that they weren't alive, and sometimes we just don't want to believe that it's actually happening. It is vital that we remember that mental illness is real and depression can touch anyone.
I've experienced suicide on a deep, deep level. I've lost people that I love to depression and addiction because they saw no other way out. These were also some of the most brightly shining people in the world. They were so happy and caring and loving, and yet they didn't see themselves that way.
My world is completely altered because these people are not here anymore and if I could say anything to them it would be this:
Don't go.
Don't go. Because this world needs people like you. This world needs people who feel things deeply and who touch people even deeper. For all of the hurt that is in your heart, there is so much joy that this life has to offer. For all the tears you've cried, there are so many smiles waiting to spread across your beautiful face. You are loved by a God that is bigger than your struggles, even when your struggles seem larger than life. He will carry you through them if only you let Him. You are important. You matter. You are vital to the people who love you. You have the potential to shatter hearts and hopes and dreams if you leave so please don't go.
If you are someone who struggles with suicidal thoughts and/or depression, please remember that you have a purpose and you are never alone. Even if you don't see it right now, you have meaning and your heart is beating for a reason. You're still here. Please stay.
Don't let your emotions trap you. Talk to someone about how you're feeling. Find someone who will listen, because I guarantee we exist.
For those who have been affected by suicide, I am so sorry. It is a hurt that cannot be expressed and a loss we will always feel. All situations are different, so I won't pretend to understand what it is you've been through — but I am so sorry that you have been through it.
Being aware of this messy world we live in is so important. We live in a world where depression and suicide exist. There is no use in sugarcoating it.
Love people, listen to people, and please ... Don't go.
For Uncle Eddie & Jake. You are so missed and forever loved.
