You Can't Say I'm 'Trying Too Hard' If I'm Doing It For Me

I don't work out or dress up to impress other people.

You Can't Say I'm 'Trying Too Hard' If I'm Doing It For Me

Many gals and guys get a pretty bad reputation these days about only looking good to "fit in" or to feel accepted or to appear attractive to their peers. But did you ever stop and think for a second that they just like to wear make up every day, work out all of the time, post mirror pics of their outfits, or take selfies on the regular because they simply feel good about themselves?

It doesn't mean they're self-centered.

It doesn't make them egotistic.

It doesn't make her a slut because she wears a full face of makeup every day.

It doesn't make them attention seekers because they spend their afternoon at the gym.

When I get asked the question, why do you care so much about how you look? Why do you dress so nice just to go to class? Why do you waste your time doing your hair every day?

My answer is "I do it for me."

I don't spend time in front of the mirror every morning, making sure my make up looks good or making sure that my hair looks better than its usual rat's nest flair, to draw any attention to myself or turn heads as I walk through campus. I do it because I enjoy it! Anyone who knows me, knows I've always been a "girly girl" who's had a huge interest in makeup ever since I was little and would watch my mom and my aunts do their make up! It's become pretty much a hobby for me!

I can watch hours and hours worth of YouTube vloggers and beauty influencers and just listen and learn and practice new makeup techniques on myself and be perfectly content! This doesn't make me shallow, this doesn't make me a "bimbo" or, again, a "slut."

Makeup is something I enjoy, and I do it for me. The same goes for working out! I do go to the gym at least 6 days out of the week. And although that may seem a little excessive to some people, working out is a part of me! It makes me feel good about myself and boosts my self-esteem. I mean who can argue with that? I don't really care if anyone sees me walk by and has an opinion on how muscular my legs look. All that really matters is that I am happy when I look in the mirror! To me, working out is also a way to relieve my stress, clear my head, and to help me feel like the best version of myself. I do it for me.

So the next time someone tells you, you're an airhead or an attention seeker for doing your makeup for hours, or bashes another gal or guy on Instagram and says they're conceded because they post a million work out selfies, it's not always true. Don't care about what other people think. Don't try to change yourself to make them happy. If you want to wear makeup every day, do it! If you want to post some basic doggie filter selfies every day, do it! Just remember to do it for you, to make yourself happy, to make yourself feel comfortable, and to make yourself feel good!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
